Muji Hankyu Nishinomiya Gardens (2023)
Japan

Ryohin Keikaku

The largest MUJI store in Hyogo Prefecture. The spatial configuration utilizes MUJI’s store design identity of wood (timber), metal (iron), and earth (stone), and a clear flow line plan differentiates the store from existing stores. In addition to ensuring sufficient brightness for the merchandise, simple glare-less lighting fixtures are used to create a crisp and clear lighting environment. The lighting also adds a feel for the materials and a sense of nature to break up uniformity in the space.

As Osaka Expo 2025 comes to a close, the Osaka Healthcare Pavilion reflects the many moments shared by its countless visitors.

Throughout the day, the lighting gently shifts from morning to night, allowing the architecture and transparent façade to reveal subtle changes in expression. Light enhances each element with natural ease, bringing the pavilion to life at every hour and leaving visitors with a quietly memorable experience.

Phase II of the China National Convention Center, which was completed in December 2024, has officially opened.

LPA was primarily responsible for the lighting design of the interior spaces and rooftop garden. The architecture, shaped like the mythical Kunpeng spreading its wings, embodies both lightness and grandeur, projecting a sense of dignity balanced with approachability.

The interior design follows the architectural concept, centered around the themes of *“harmonious coexistence”* and *“unity of heaven and humanity.”* It skillfully integrates light, materials, and spatial flow to create a ceremonial conference space imbued with the memory of civilization.

The lighting design adopts a modest and streamlined approach, producing a distinctive lighting environment while also considering energy efficiency and carbon reduction. To accommodate a variety of settings, three different color temperatures were combined and applied according to the character of each space.

In double-height spaces such as the entrance hall and handshake hall, vertical lighting was used to enhance overall brightness and spatial depth. Light spilling from the interior through the bird-shaped windows creates layered patterns of light and shadow, bringing vitality to the architecture’s nighttime appearance.

The third floor features the lunch hall, summit hall, and banquet hall, which support multiple functions and maintain a connection to the rooftop garden. The Chinese-style garden, *Suyuan*, reveals classical silhouettes through the light that softly radiates from within, painting a scroll-like scene where ancient and contemporary beauty coexist.

Here, light is no longer merely illumination—it becomes a quiet dialogue between architecture and nature, history and the present.

16 Design Memorandum by Mr Mende aligns our roles as lighting designers and the importance of light.

Do you know that Mr Kaoru Mende has various books about Lighting Design?
It is a collective presentation of his core philosophy of lighting as a cultural, environmental, and spatial experience, rather than merely technical illumination.
Across these books, it ranges from design monographs to urban nightscape studies. Mr Mende emphasizes the importance of light and shadow, context, and human sensation.

✨ LPA-SG in Osaka, Patina Osaka ✨

Drawing inspiration from the patina’s inherent textures and colors, LPA incorporated warm-toned indirect lighting, complemented by functional task lighting. This approach creates a play of light and shadow throughout the space, providing guests with a sense of wonder and comfort in various areas as the day transitions.

Being in this space allows guests to feel enveloped in warmth and calm, where light accentuates texture and material. The subtle play of glow and shadow creates an atmosphere that feels both timeless and refined.

LPA-SG and LPA-TK recently spent a few days in Osaka, visiting the Expo site, reviewing several completed projects — including Patina Osaka, W Hotel, St. Regis Hotel, and Louis Vuitton — and exploring the vibrant streets of the city.
As lighting designers, being abroad offers valuable opportunities to learn, observe, and experience lighting in different contexts and cultures.
