Wow. Half of the year has already flown by already😲 How has 2024 been for you?
Let me introduce a ritual held at Kyoto shrines during this time of year called "Nagoshi no Harae."

At shrines, large rings of miscanthus, taller than a person, are set up, and visitors pass through these rings to ward off evil. In Kyoto, there is a custom of eating triangular sweets called "Minazuki," named after the old term for June, designed to resemble pieces of ice. The red color of the adzuki beans used in the sweets is believed to ward off evil spirits.

I visited Okazaki Shrine near Heian Shrine, and it was quite peaceful with just a few locals around. This shrine, where rabbits are revered as divine messengers, is also known for blessings related to safe childbirth and fertility🐰🤎

This is a rare and valuable item. When placed on the wall, it measures impressive dimensions of 162.5 cm (5.3 feet) in height and 62.5 cm (2 feet) in width. In traditional Japanese homes, paper room dividers are known as 'byōbu.' This piece comes from a dismantled byōbu, with its surface covered by paper records inscribed with brush writing, likely from some kind of ledger. Unfortunately, the text is too old for me to decipher, but it appears to be from the Edo period, though the exact age is uncertain. Originally, the side adorned with geometric patterns was meant to decorate interiors. However, from a modern perspective, the side with the backing paper appears more intriguing. Enjoy the interwoven brushstrokes and the texture of the layered washi paper.

When I acquired it, it was already folded to roughly A3 size, so it bears fold marks.

Ahhh... What a dreamy matcha bowl! It's frustrating that I can't fully convey her charm through photos. The exterior is a soft, matte matcha latte color, reminiscent of macarons. In contrast, the interior resembles a translucent candy-like brown at its core, capturing the Aurora-filled sky with various colors interweaving. The artist is Ousuke Nakajima, a renowned ceramicist who thrived in Seto, a famous pottery region in Japan. The item comes with a biography of the artist and is presented in a paulownia box. Every time I engage in vintage hunting, I can't help but feel that this piece is a treasure I strongly desire to add to my collection. I look forward to the joy of sharing the beauty of this item with someone, somewhere around the world who appreciates it as much as I do.

Kyoto has entered its rainy season, bringing many cloudy and rainy days. With the blossoming spring behind us, the number of visitors to Kyoto has also calmed down. However, I believe this time of year might just be one of the best seasons to enjoy Kyoto. Have you ever sat on the veranda of an old temple, listening to the sound of raindrops falling on the tiled roofs, stone gardens, ponds, and plants? The traditional Japanese wooden architecture absorbs the moisture in the air, making the space feel soft and comfortable. The occasional sunlight peeking through the clouds is also truly magnificent. If you have the chance, please visit Kyoto in June.

This small flower vase is better suited for wildflowers than store-bought flowers. Its cracked, rough texture resembles a rock, and the vine handle enhances the natural beauty of the plants. One side features a ring pattern, but the simple black side is also attractive. Its rustic and primitive charm would complement a Japandi-style interior beautifully.

Japanese Crafts and Vintage from Kyoto.

The pure and primitive beauty of the form created by curves and straight lines evokes the warmth and strength of Mother Earth. In Japan, there is an ancient culture of making Shimekazari to welcome Shinto deities. Rice straw is like a mother that has protected and nurtured rice for the agrarian people whose livelihood was based on rice cultivation. Because of this, the straw itself was also considered sacred. (In areas where it was difficult to grow rice, they also used other straw plants.) Apart from some broad similarities, the shapes of Shimekazari vary from region to craftsman.
"Mizuhiki" represents the connection between people's hearts and souls, embodying the art of binding.

From ancient times to the present day, ordinary households decorate their entrance to the house to welcome the fresh new year. However, it can be used throughout the year in the sense of inviting good fortune and purifying the place.
