🎎
As March 3rd approaches, Kyoto gently prepares for Hina Matsuri.

This traditional Japanese celebration honors the health and happiness of girls while marking the change of season and symbolically wishing away misfortune
— a reflection of Japan’s deep respect for seasonal transitions.

In homes throughout the city, families display beautifully crafted Hina dolls and sometimes prepare seasonal hair ornaments to welcome the new season.
If you are preparing for Hina Matsuri yourself, you can find finely crafted Hina dolls and delicate hair accessories with us — pieces that embody Kyoto’s refined aesthetic and enduring craftsmanship.

On the day of the festival, many locals visit Shimogamo Shrine (下鴨神社), one of Kyoto’s most historic shrines, to observe the celebrations and pray for family well-being. The shrine becomes a gathering place where tradition and family wishes are quietly shared.

Seasonal wagashi sweets are also part of the celebration.
Nearby, Shogoin Yatsuhashi Sohonten (聖護院八ッ橋総本店) offers special Hina Festival confections available from March 1–3.

Experience the first festival of March — and the understated elegance of Kyoto. 🌸

Daikan – The Coldest Season of the Year

Daikan marks the coldest period of the year in the traditional Japanese calendar, lasting from January 20 to February 2.

Snow is falling in Kyoto today.
Camellias blooming in the snow are especially beautiful.

Even in the depths of winter, camellias bloom with quiet strength, admired for their resilience and timeless beauty.

How to open a decorative folding fan 🪭

We often get messages like,
“I can’t open my fan 😅”

Decorative fans can feel a bit stiff at first.
Try gently moving it back and forth as you open it — it should open smoothly ✨

Tōka Ebisu (十日戎) in Kyoto — a traditional festival held every January to pray for prosperity in business and good fortune.

In Kyoto, Tōka Ebisu is known for its quiet elegance and deep sense of tradition, different from the lively crowds seen in Osaka. People offer prayers to Ebisu, the god of commerce, and receive lucky charms decorated with bamboo branches, symbolizing growth and success.

Walking through the shrine, surrounded by lantern light, traditional clothing, and the sound of ritual prayers, felt like stepping into a timeless scene of Japan.

These moments of living tradition are one of the reasons I love Kyoto — where culture is not only preserved, but truly lived.
