This piece features the famous story of Omori Hikoshichi, who carried an old lady across a river just to realize it was an in disguise. The workmanship is quite detailed and finely executed using gold, Shakudo, copper and silver in Takabori technique on a Shibuichi ground.

It is interesting to note that he signed this piece with 'Gyounen 60 Sai' which translates as 'died at the age of 60'. This expression carries rather a poetic meaning as the artist is appreciating his old age and in a way welcoming the end of his life.

We are happily surprised to find out that this piece we posted a while ago is actually from the Tokugawa collection and was made by the Yasuda school (not Mito as the NBTHK would attribute). Unfortunately the original document must have been lost, but luckily is was published by Fukushi Shigeo in his Tosogu classroom.
What a relief we didn't sell this piece before finding out!

Kokubunji Sukekuni Katana

It’s rare to find Good swords in good Koshirae! Normally a collector would have to compromise.

Here is a Tokubetsu Hozon ‚den Kokubunji Sukekuni‘ with an amazing Koshirae.
70.5 cm Suguha hamon with Ko Gunome and ashi, beautifully visible mokume Hada highlighted with a great Utsuri.

The Saya is in black Irish ornamented with chrysanthemums, the Tsuba Shakudo Nanako with great detail, the Fuchi Kashira is flush gold inlay in Shakudo with Nanako finish and the Menuki solid gold.
Sukekuni is said to be one of the founders of the Ko-Mihara school who studied under Fukuoka Ichimonji Sukemura and went to Bingo province in the Kamakura era.
A great set by this Jo-Jo Saku rated smith.

This is a beautiful example of the typical Toryusai school style with its dense iron, tatemaru-gata, and sukinokoshi-mimi.

The very classical motif of dragon and tiger, the representations of Ying and Yang, male and female, is placed on the front while mount Fuji is decorating the back.
