Storyteller, essayist, and a true master of playful invention—we, Oshinsha, always look forward to hearing his stories whenever we visit. A trip to Hanjiro Sawafuji’s studio in Iwate always feels like stepping into a playground of endless ideas ✂️

Having experimented with so many different crafts over the years, our mentor Sawafuji-san ultimately settled on hariko (papier-mâché). “I just get bored so easily!” he laughs with a mischievous smile. For him, hariko gives the infinite freedom to invent, test, and play every single day.

Crafted using a special reverse-molding (ura-bari) technique with washi paper, his Rokuhara Hariko carries a uniquely smooth, warm texture with lighthearted, endearing expressions.

Taiwan Crafts Collection 🇹🇼✨

Our relation with Taiwan began around late 2022.

Starting with a small pop-up in Taichung, and going on to include educational exchanges with Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) and showcases in Paris and Helsinki—various projects and interactions have naturally naturally connected us with the island's craft scene over the years.

Taiwan’s crafts are shaped by a unique blend of cultures and history. Today, we are introducing works from 8 contemporary studios working with local materials—from retro window lattice motifs on ceramics to Tainan soil research, woven bamboo, and painterly indigo.

With the classic presence of a traditional iron kettle and a distinctly modern sensibility, Mizore Arare by Tayama Studio finds a beautiful balance between heritage and daily use.

While traditional tetsubin (iron kettle) often feature perfectly uniform studs, the hail (arare) pattern on Mizore Aware is applied entirely by hand in a deliberate, random placement—giving each kettle a subtle, tactile warmth that only human touch can create.

The handle (tsuru) features mushikui (worm-eaten effect), an ancient decorative technique used in ironmaking that captures the fleeting beauty of decay and passage of time—a core element of wabi-sabi.

Despite its deep roots in 400 years of ironmaking tradition, Mizore Arare is thoughtfully designed for modern living. Weighing a manageable 1.1kg, its refined silhouette blends seamlessly into any interior, whether sitting on the stove or displayed on a shelf.

It is the signature standard of Tayama Studio—honoring centuries of craft while seamlessly fitting into everyday life.

Deep in Akita Prefecture, Shiraiwayaki carries a captivating 200-year history. Its hallmark is the striking Namako-yu (海鼠釉)—a rich sea-blue glaze formed by a natural reaction with local rice-husk ash—balanced against a deep, matte brown Doro-yu (泥釉).

First established in 1771, Shiraiwayaki disappeared for 70 years until Sunao Watanabe revived it in 1975. Together with her husband, Toshiaki Watanabe, they spent two decades perfecting these signature glazes. Today, the studio is run as a family kiln where distinct artistic visions coexist: Toshiaki integrates traditional techniques with modern sculpture, while 2nd-generation artisan Aoi Watanabe reimagines Namako-yu through Scandinavian-inspired forms, Kyoto-trained wheel techniques, and subtle gold accents.

Nami-Usagi (Rabbit & Wave)
A spirited symbol of resilience, depicting a rabbit leaping gracefully over turbulent waves. In Japanese tradition, this motif represents the strength to overcome challenges and achieve great leaps forward.

Sitting Cat
A charming, soulful companion available in Black, White, or Calico. Each cat is hand-painted with its own unique personality, designed to welcome peace and daily good fortune to your favorite nook.

White Rabbit
Inspired by the ancient legend of the "White Hare of Inaba," a tale of kindness and new beginnings. This elegant doll captures the spirit of Tottori (Inaba) and serves as a gentle bringer of luck.

Meticulously hand-painted in Iwate, Japan, using the traditional ura-bari technique, these hariko are designed to fill your living space with light and "good vibes."

Yamanitori, Embroidery Born from the Rhythms of Life

Hand-stitched in Tottori, Yamanitori (山ニ鳥) creates embroidery that breathes in the quiet "in-between" moments of daily life. Drawing from her roots in Kogin-zashi, each piece is a soulful expression of texture and light.

By layering up to six different shades of thread, she achieves an incredible three-dimensional depth that makes every motif—from playful cats to seasonal symbols truly one-of-a-kind 🧵

鳥取×ヨーテボリクラフトエクスチェンジプロジェクト2025

August Update エスビョーン・グリップ × 藤本順正　
展示発表「8月の椅子」

2025年8月23日（土）〜24日（日）、湯梨浜町の旧吉井歯科にて、国際的な工芸交流プロジェクト「クラフトエクスチェンジプロジェクト2025」の最新展示発表「8月の椅子」を開催します。

本プロジェクトは、スウェーデン・ヨーテボリの6名のアーティストが鳥取に滞在し、地元工房や自然から得たインスピレーションをもとに作品を制作・発表するものです。昨年2月の鳥取滞在後も、各アーティストは制作を続け、今年10月にはヨーテボリ国際ビエンナーレで成果発表が予定されています。

今回は、参加アーティストの一人であるエスビョーン・グリップ氏が再来日し、三朝町の木工作家・藤本順正氏と共作した椅子「ロープ・スツール」の完成を記念して、湯梨浜町で展示を行います。「ロープ・スツール」は会場で購入できるほか、作家と一緒に組み立てができる体験も実施。関連イベントとして、作家によるトークイベントやカフェ出店など、二日間にわたり工芸と交流を楽しめる催しです。

At ukiroosh., glass is transformed into delicate expressions of light and form.

Specializing in laminated sheet glass, Shiro Yano layers and bonds ordinary window glass and mirrors, playing with transparency and reflection to create striking works. Each piece is carefully cut, polished, and assembled to reveal intricate depth and unique visual effects.

Originally from Fukuoka, Yano trained at a glassmaking school in Kanagawa before refining his craft at a prominent studio in northwestern Japan’s Hokuriku region. Twenty years ago, he and Yuuki Takenaka, a glass artist specializing in pâte de verre, established their workshop in the mountains of eastern Tottori. Today, ukiroosh. is part of Inaba Saigo Craft Village, a vibrant hub of artisans dedicated to preserving and evolving traditional craftsmanship.
