屋号の話。「丸」と「嘉」

屋号の「嘉」は、創業者・小坂嘉男の名前に由来します。「嘉」という字には、「よいこと」「喜ばしいこと」といった意味があり、古くから縁起のよい文字とされてきました。

そしてもうひとつの「丸」は、
嘉男自身が愛してやまなかったかたち——“まる”。

丸い器、丸いお椀、丸いお盆。その曲線には、手に取る人を優しく包み込むような温かさがあります。嘉男は、形としての「丸」だけでなく、「物事を円満に、調和の中で進めたい」という自身の生き方も、「丸」という字に託しました。そうして生まれたのが、「丸嘉」という名前です。

単なる屋号ではなく、これは、人とものづくりの関係、そして職人としての美学を象徴と思っています。

丸いかたちの中に宿る、やさしさと強さ。嘉の心を受け継いで、これからも暮らしに調和をもたらす漆器を届けていきたいと願っています。

The Meaning Behind “Maruyoshi”

The name Maruyoshi carries the spirit of our founder, Yoshio Kosaka.

“Yoshi (嘉)”, from Yoshio’s name, means goodness and joy, and has long been considered an auspicious character in Japan.

“Maru (丸)” represents the circle—a form Yoshio deeply loved. Its gentle curves embody warmth, harmony, and completeness.

Together, Maru and Yoshi express his wish to live and create in harmony.

Today, we carry this spirit forward, creating lacquerware that brings beauty and harmony to everyday life.

A bento box finished in white urushi lacquer, with a beautiful, lustrous sheen.
Made from Japanese cypress and sawara cypress from Kiso, the wooden base is repeatedly rubbed with raw urushi and carefully wiped to create a traditional “fuki-urushi” finish. This makes the surface resistant to stains and easy to care for in everyday use.
Urushi also has natural antibacterial properties, making it well suited for keeping food fresh during the warmer months.
Its deep oval shape holds a generous serving of rice, while the natural moisture-regulating properties of the wood help keep rice soft and delicious, even when cooled.
