NEW PROJECT | YAJIMA FULL ORDER KITCHEN SERIES

At first glance, the kitchen takes on the appearance of a console placed within the living room, challenging preconceived notions of what a kitchen should look like. At the same time, continuity between the front kitchen and the back kitchen—through consistent design language, materials, and proportions—allows functionality and aesthetic coherence to be realized across the entire space. The faucet is lowered to the level of the sink, while a movable marble countertop conceals the sink itself, minimizing any visible signs of everyday use. By allowing the front kitchen and back kitchen to respond to one another as a unified design, the project gently distinguishes between the “kitchen to be seen” and the “kitchen to be used.” In doing so, it proposes a new vision of the kitchen—one that dissolves into the living environment while maintaining both functional rigor and spatial beauty.

NEW PROJECT | YAJIMA FULL ORDER KITCHEN SERIES

Under the concept “Freedom for the Kitchen,” the project emerged alongside YAJIMA’s broader brand transformation—from a function-oriented manufacturer to a proposal-driven brand that closely engages with evolving lifestyles. Against this backdrop, the design process began by reconsidering the very nature of the kitchen itself. Moving beyond conventional kitchen archetypes that foreground efficiency and utility, the project aims to create a kitchen with the freedom, presence, and autonomy of fine furniture—an object that participates in the living space as a meaningful architectural element.
Freedom of form.
Freedom of materials.
Freedom of layout.

We’re incredibly honored that SYMBOLPLUS OFFICE has won "Interiors Project of the Year" and "Workplace Interior (Small)" at the Dezeen Awards 2025!

Selected from over 4,300 entries across 89 countries, this double recognition means so much to our team. The jury praised the project as “authentic yet futuristic” and “a perfect merging of two worlds,” noting how natural materials, layered washi, and flexible partitions create a workplace that respects the past while imagining the future.

Thank you to everyone involved, the craftspeople, and for this remarkable honor.

Special thanks!

NEW PROJECT | SYMBOLPLUS OFFICE

The renovation of this timber office was guided by the values of its owner, architect Akio Hayashi, who requested that only natural materials be used, avoiding synthetic components. Responding to this, we sourced red earth from Ishikawa and applied it in layered plasters that harmonize with
the timber’s warmth, emphasizing texture over finish. Shoji partitions were made from reclaimed “Tosa washi”, originally destined for disposal. As the paper was too thin for architectural use, we layered it to enhance durability and translucency, offering gentle spatial division without
heaviness. These partitions flexibly reconfigure space, concealing shelving and equipment in the meeting room as needed. No visible hinges or metal fittings were used—traditional carpentry details allow movement through friction and joinery alone. We preserved the original structure as
much as possible, designing all interventions to follow its spatial rhythm and proportions. Rather than asserting new forms, we aimed for a quiet dialogue with what existed. Every decision—from proportion to tactility—was shaped by a belief in continuity and place. In this way, the project
does not simply house work but reflects our philosophy: that design should be rooted in context,
humility, and time.

NEW PROJECT | SYMBOLPLUS OFFICE

SYMBOLPLUS OFFICE is the renovation of our own workspace, located in a timber building in Tokyo owned by architect Akio Hayashi. The project reconsiders the meaning of the office in a
hybrid work era. By rejecting synthetic materials in favor of earth plasters, reclaimed washi paper,
and traditional joinery, the design expresses our commitment to longevity and place-based design.
As designers, we see our work as a search for values that transcend trends—this project is both a
physical and philosophical embodiment of that pursuit.

SYMBOLPLUS OFFICE

NEW PROJECT | SETOUCHI ART INDUSTRY

For the Setouchi Art and Industry Festival scheduled for 2026, we were responsible for the overall exhibition planning of the monitor tour conducted in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, in January 2025, as well as the design of the featured work 【Breathing Chair】 for Miyahara Manufacturing.

In the overall exhibition planning, we composed spatial narratives that maximized the expressive potential of art at three different factories, each reflecting its own unique spatial characteristics and context

At PowerX, where the factory’s glass façade posed a challenge of by making artworks visible from outside, we used sheer organza fabric to precisely control
sightlines—ensuring that the visitor’s of encounter with the artwork inside was deliberate intentional and impactful.
