The Murasaki Mura lantern festival provides one of the greatest photo opportunities of the year here on Okinawa. Photographing people and glowing lanterns together is a challenge. I used a fresnel spotlight for the key light and two Speedlights for fill and rim lighting. Hauling in all the equipment and changing into the kimonos was a chore, but the results were worth it. Jessica in fields of barley. One of my favorite portraits. Jessica just shines like a subject in a Rembrandt painting. It’s like she is emitting the light.
This was shot in studio with orange gels and gold reflectors. Pro tip: To get her hair right as if she was running, we probably should have used a fan, but we just had her twirl. .

So I saw some Instagram Reels that had a BTS of a photoshoot with a lovely young model wielding a flaming sword. The photographer demonstrated how they applied some kind of flash gel to the blade, lit it and whoosh. It burned in about 2 seconds. Since my wife won’t let me play with fire in the house, I tried to recreate the effect with colored gels, fresnel spotlights and some Photoshop. Looks pretty good doesn’t it? And the smoke detector never went off once.
