For years, Kenyan artists, textile designers, printmakers and experimental creators have watched Jacquard products from afar through tutorials, international studios and global art communities far from Kenya.

Now they’re finally here in Nairobi.
We’re happy to officially welcome jacquard products to Kenya through Eva's Nairobi art supplies.

Jacquard has spent decades building a reputation for serious creative experimentation without compromising professional quality. From tie and dye kits, silk dyes, cyanotype everything artists need to work with fabric and textiles.

Jacquard is globally respected by artists working in studios, fashion, costume design, textile art, printmaking and mixed media practice.

This is the kind of material that expands the horizons for what Kenyan artists can create and achieve.

That matters greatly for the growth of art in Kenya.

As Eva's we believe that part of growing an art ecosystem is not just selling supplies.

We believe it's also about making sure local artists have access to the same world-class materials shaping conversations globally.
Welcome to Kenya, Jacquard. 🇰🇪

Many artists hear terms like “professional quality” or “artist grade” without ever getting the opportunity to truly experience the difference firsthand.

As part of this year’s Affordable Art Show experience, artists will have access to a special Material Testing Station facilitated by Eva’s Nairobi Art Supplies.

This interactive space has been designed to give artists a rare opportunity to physically test and compare different levels of art materials side by side — from student-grade to professional-quality surfaces, paints, papers, brushes, charcoal, and mark-making tools.

This station is meant to make that difference visible, tactile, and practical through direct testing and experimentation.

Artists will be able to explore:

• Paper texture and absorbency
• Pigment strength and colour behaviour
• Brush responsiveness and control
• Charcoal richness and blendability and canvas quality and proper stretching

Whether you are an emerging artist or an experienced practitioner, we invite you to come test, compare, experiment, and deepen your understanding of materials and artistic practice.

Open to all artists on submission day, this Sunday at the museum.

We remember when finding a professional-grade paper or pigment in Nairobi felt like a hunt. Before Eva’s Nairobi Art Supplies became a shop, it started from witnessing the daily struggle artists faced trying to access serious materials consistently.

In those early days, I was selling supplies from a backpack at Dust Depo, Godown and Mukuru , meeting artists who were still experimenting, searching for their voice, and working with whatever materials they could access at the time.

Years later, some of those same artists are now holding major exhibitions, developing powerful visual languages, and entering international conversations and they've continued to grow with us.

That journey is one of the reasons we continue to support the .ke

Spaces like this are far more than exhibitions. They are the research and development labs of the creative economy.

This is where emerging artists experiment, fail, evolve, refine their language, and eventually find their audience. It is where collectors discover future important voices long before the wider market catches up.

Artists need more than talent alone to survive.
They need:
- Spaces to exhibit
- Access to quality materials
-Technical guidance
-Visibility
-Ecosystems that take their work seriously and
-Communities willing to invest in their growth early.

Beyond the show, we believe we are helping build part of the future archive of Kenyan cultural heritage by supplying archival materials that will help preserve our art well into the future. Yes, the technical side of art matters too.

A lot of people think sponsorship is about logos on banners. For us, it has always been about something much bigger.

That's why we keep turning up to support the show year after year..

12 days until the doors open for the 20th edition of the largest art show in East Africa.

See you there!!!

If you want to understand the pulse of contemporary Kenyan art, you have to look at the work of Peterson Kamwathi.

'Tabula Rasa' exhibition is currently showing at NCAI. It is a masterclass in conceptual depth and social commentary.

For years, Kamwathi has remained one of the most important voices in Kenyan contemporary art and his work stands out in how it interrogates society.
He is renowned for his mastery of charcoal and mixed media.

Attending this talk is a rare opportunity to peel back the "sedimented" layers of Kamwathi's process and understand how he maps the contemporary Kenyan condition.

It’s one thing to see the work; it’s another to understand the themes that shape a practice as rigorous as his.

For those serious about the 'why' behind the art, these kind of discussions are where the real insight happens

The timing of this exhibition is also particularly important. NCAI (Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute) was recently announced as an invited participant for the 61st Venice Biennale in 2026.

For Kenya, this is a monumental milestone!! (I like to think of the Venice Biennale as the 'Olympics of art's)

It signifies a shift from national pavilions to the global recognition of Kenyan-led institutions on the world's most prestigious art stage.

It’s a validation of the rigorous archival and curatorial work being done right here in Nairobi.

I’ll definitely be at the Artist Talk on Saturday, May 16th, to hear Peterson in conversation with Jonathan Fraser.

See you at NCAI.

It’s free entry, but you’ll want to RSVP early. This is going to be a packed room.

Oil paints are categorised in 3.
Entry level e.g montmarte
Studio/intermediate and advanced student eg pebeo,Picasso, and Winton
Professional/artist quality eg Winsor Newton artist oil paint

There’s a moment that happens to many painters after a few years in the studio. They squeeze out a color they once loved… and suddenly the paint feels wrong.Too oily, weak, chalky or too transparent.

That’s usually the moment an artist begins understanding the difference between student-grade oils and artist-quality oils.
Professional oils are not simply “more expensive paint.”

They are built differently from the inside out.
Higher pigment load, better binding oils, cleaner color mixing and better lightfastness.

Many lower-grade paints are packed with fillers, extenders, cheap oils, and stabilizers to reduce production costs. That’s why they lose vibrancy quickly, struggle to hold brush marks, and
become muddy during mixing. They also
require excessive paint for coverage.

Serious artists eventually become extremely sensitive to these differences. In fact, many professionals can identify a good oil paint almost immediately from:
the drag
the body
the pigment strength
the mixing behavior
and how the paint responds to pressure under the brush.

Oil paint is not just “color in a tube.”

The materials shape the final work.

At Eva’s Nairobi Art Supplies, we stock oil ranges for different levels of practice, from student exploration to serious studio work and help artists understand the difference before they spend their money.

We however want you to start with the right materials from the word go that's why we are getting rid of entry level paints like montnarte.

In April 2018, we introduced Mont Marte to Kenya because we believed beginner artists deserved better than cheap, frustrating craft store paint.

To thank the community that built with this paint over the last 8 years, we negotiated a special Anniversary Batch at a throwback price.

Just a limited batch for the artists who were there from the beginning.

This offer is available instore only.

⚠️ Once sold out, it’s gone.

Remember montmarte Oil paints remain discounted as we are discontinuing them as we upgrade to studio and professional oil paints. Grab them while stocks last.

Yesterday I told my Gen z artist friend (simtaji, he knows himself) I want to rush to village market to catch Kaigwa's show before it closes and he asked me "who is that" ati kaigwa who? Wasanii tukue serious kidogo! 😃😅

No I had to launch into a lesson on how privileged we are to have this moment with us right now.

In Nairobi right this moment, We are so incredibly privileged to have a living legend in our midst. Gakunju Kaigwa’s solo exhibition, "Ancestral Grain," is showing at the Rooftop Gallery in Village Market, and it is a breathtaking experience.

For those who might not be aware why I'm calling it a privilege and who don’t know his work, Kaigwa isn't just a sculptor; he is a cornerstone of the Kenyan contemporary scene and a recipient of the Order of the Burning Spear for his contributions to the arts in Kenya.

His work is held in prestigious collections like the British Museum and he is a globally recognized master, yet here we are with the privilege of seeing a curated collection right in our backyard.

Kaigwa doesn't just carve, he has a profound "conversation" with materials. This show demonstrates his mastery across mediums, showing how he transforms stone, bronze, and particularly centuries-old wood into forms that feel human, fluid, ancient and amazingly functional.

More exciting, he even has his sketch book and his tools on display, offering a mesmerizing window into his craft.

"Ancestral Grain" is elegant, thought-provoking, and deeply grounded. Go and see it before the doors close this evening. This is a rare, powerful show you don’t want to miss!

If you want to know how rare this monent is, pass by village, and ask him when he last had a solo show and see just how privileged we are right now.

Another reason to pass by is to speak to a master, and learn from a master at his peak.

And TewasArt Gallery deserves commendation for very well curated show and for bringing this to us.
