Meta starts charging Kenyan businesses for WhatsApp customer replies

From 1st October 2026, Meta is now charging businesses that use the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) KSh 0.52 for every customer-service reply after the first 1,000 free replies each month.

Important clarification: This does not affect the normal WhatsApp Business app that most small businesses and mama mbogas use. That remains free.

It only affects companies using the paid API platform — banks, online shops, delivery companies, SACCOs, hospitals, etc. that handle high volumes of customer chats through WhatsApp.

Utility messages (order confirmations, payment alerts, delivery updates) are also now charged even inside the 24-hour window.

The free tier of 1,000 replies per month is per phone number, so bigger operations with multiple numbers get more free messages.

Is your business affected? Check if you’re on the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) or just the free app.

Thank you for joining us for the groundbreaking of the Dangote East Africa Refinery! 🇰🇪🤝🌍
Not just a ceremony…
This was a full continental summit disguised as a groundbreaking.
Presidents flew in.
Cameras rolled.
Hard hats were worn for exactly 12 minutes.
And history was officially declared.
By the time the speeches ended, the refinery was already halfway to 2030 in the PowerPoint.
Kenya has now officially entered the “Thank You for Coming” era of development.
One shovel.
Multiple heads of state.
Zero fuel in the tanks… yet.
But the plan?
Fully delivered. 🔥

Kenya has officially entered “By Hook or Crook” mode! 😁
The Standard says it all — power, politics, and a multi-trillion project under scrutiny.
President Ruto:
“In Ethiopia they guaranteed to buy fertiliser for 10 years. Here we are saying we should give conditions to the investor… Investors are our friends, not our enemies.”
Aliko Dangote:
“Anybody who wants to cause trouble, we are ready for his trouble and we will give him a headache.”
Translation:
The refinery is coming… whether the courts like it, the people like it, or the constitution likes it.
Hook? ✅
Crook? ✅
Headache for critics? Already ordered.
By 2030 the fuel will be flowing… and by then some of us will still be asking for the feasibility study. 😂
Welcome to Kenya, where big projects don’t ask for permission — they just break ground.

“This investor had previously refused to invest here, and statistics indicate that more than 55 companies have closed down during the Ruto administration.
If you lose 55 investors and bring in one investor, you have to ask yourself: what benefit does that bring to Kenyans?”
— K24 TV
This is the hard question the country should be asking.
One big groundbreaking does not cancel out dozens of businesses that have shut their doors.
Net investment, jobs created versus jobs lost, and the real impact on ordinary Kenyans — that is the true scorecard.
Big announcements make headlines.
The actual balance sheet of the economy is what matters.

Kenya is governed by the rule of law.
No investor — billionaire or not — can circumvent the Constitution and call those seeking legal redress “trouble makers.”
Article 1 of our Katiba is clear:
Sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya.
Not the President. Not foreign billionaires.
The United Green Movement has laid out serious concerns about the Lamu oil refinery:
Alleged constitutional violations and lack of public participation
Questions over the use of public funds and strategic national assets
Claims of ancestral land in Chandavai and Magogoni being handed over without proper compensation
Environmental risks to the coast and local livelihoods
The same opacity that has kept fuel prices higher in Kenya than in neighbouring countries
These are not “trouble.”
These are legitimate questions that any serious democracy must answer.
Big projects must come with clean hands, full transparency, and respect for the Constitution.
Anything less is an insult to the people who own this country.
-David Maraga

To Mr. Aliko Dangote and the Dangote Group:
Everyone has a right to go to court and seek redress.
Calling a fundamental constitutional right “trouble” only exposes a preference for opacity and impunity.
Come with clean hands and you will not fear being challenged in court.
— Miguna Miguna
This is a clear reminder:
In Kenya, no investor is above the law or the Constitution.
Legitimate questions and court processes are not “trouble” — they are democracy at work.
