borax and pure washing soda can be used together as a laundry booster for brightening whites and removing dinginess. They work best alongside your regular detergent; they aren’t a true bleach.

For a normal washing-machine load

* ½ cup washing soda
* ¼ cup borax
* Your normal amount of laundry detergent

Add the powders directly to the drum or detergent compartment according to your machine’s instructions, then wash on the warmest temperature safe for the fabric.

For extra-dingy whites

You can pre-soak:

* 4–5 L of warm water
* 2 tablespoons washing soda
* 2 tablespoons borax

Soak for 1–2 hours, then wash normally with detergent.
