Not all glass is made the same. different types of glass are used in different roles.
1. Float glass: this is the regular glass that comes from the factory. It can be used for most door and window glass applications but one thing to note is that it breaks into large shards which can injure a person.
2. Laminated glass: this is where two panes of glass are stuck together using a sheet of paper called a pvb layer. This makes the glass durable and sound proof. The attached pieces of glass can be any type from toughened to frosted to annealed/float glass.
3. Toughened glass: this is glass that goes through a process of rapid heating and cooling. This causes the glass to be extremely tough, so much so that you can stand on it without breaking it. This is the glass you find being used in office partitions, doors and windows, shower cubicles, facades etc, due to its tougness. This glass breaks into tiny shards making it unlikely to injure a person.
4. Obscured glass/ frosted glass: this is glass that is not smooth on one side, this creates a refractive feature that makes it hard to see through the glass. It is mostly used in areas that require privacy like bathroom glass, glass on doors that require privacy and office partitions.
5. Tinted glass: this glass is made by adding a dye to the glass during the manufacturing process. This makes the glass have a color tint. This glass is good for outward / sun facing windows which require light to go through but not the uv rays.
6. Double glazing : this is where two panes of glass are attached and argon gas or normal air is pumped between them. This glass is good for areas where sound proofing and light control is necessary.
