The five specs to write down before you shop for anything
Most furniture shopping happens backwards. People fall in love with a look first, then find out later what is actually holding that look together, usually after something starts sagging or creaking. Write these five things down before you shop, and you will ask better questions than most salespeople expect.
Frame. This is the part nobody sees and everybody eventually feels. Ask what wood the frame is built from. A hardwood frame, blue gum for sofas, mahogany for tables and stools, will hold its joints for years. Softer woods or unspecified frames tend to loosen and creak far sooner than anyone expects.
Foam. Ask specifically what density the cushion foam is. High resilience or super high density foam holds its shape after being sat on repeatedly, bouncing back instead of slowly flattening into a permanent dent shaped like whoever sits there most.
Fill. If the piece has scatter cushions or pillow backs, ask what fills them. Pure fibre filling stays plump and even, while cheaper synthetic fill tends to clump and go flat within months.
Fabric. Ask about the weave, not just the colour. A tougher weave resists snagging and wears better over daily use, which matters more than people admit once real life, children, pets, guests, starts happening on that sofa.
Finish. Ask how the piece is finished and stitched. Clean, even stitching and a tidy finish underneath is usually a good sign of how much care went into everything else you cannot see.
Frame, foam, fill, fabric, finish. Five words, one honest checklist.
Save this before your next shopping trip so you know exactly what to ask, no matter where you are buying from.
