**WOMEN WHO KEEP THINGS MOVING**

Somewhere between Sam Neua and Xam Tai, after another long day of village visits, Veo turned to me in the car and said:

“We should be doing more of this.”

Working directly with women’s producer groups is not new to Ock Pop Tok. It’s something we’ve been building for years — connecting with weavers, silk producers and artisans, supporting their work and, wherever we can, creating more direct links to markets.

But travelling through Houaphan brought the importance of this work into sharp focus again.

We met women raising silkworms, weaving textiles, leading producer groups, running businesses and supporting their communities.

Strong women.
Capable women.
Entrepreneurial women.

The talent is there.
The skills are there.
The energy is there.

The challenge is making sure these women can connect more directly to markets and receive the value their work deserves.

So, as we travelled, we talked about how we can strengthen the networks we already have — and how we can connect more women and producer groups directly with customers.

One of the simplest ways is to bring them to Luang Prabang.

Bring their textiles.
Bring their stories.
Let people meet the women behind the work.

That’s exactly the thinking behind our **Folk Art Market Fair at the Living Crafts Centre** — creating a space where artisan producers can come together, meet customers and share their work directly.

It’s one small but important way of keeping things moving.

Following the Threads | Houaphan 2026

We'd come to Muang Son to buy silk.
The women there produce some of the finest bombyx silk we've seen.
Before we left, we asked them a question we often ask in villages.
"Is there a story here we should know?"
They smiled.
"Yes."
"The General."
A little later, a 96-year-old war hero joined us around the table.
He was sharp, charismatic and looked remarkably youthful.
Then he told us how, before a famous battle in 1968, he had a dream.
When he woke up, he had grown two extra teeth.
The teeth gave him special powers.
He even showed us where they had appeared.
Nobody laughed.
Nobody questioned it.
The General believed it.
The village believed it.
We came looking for silk.
We left with stories.
Sometimes that's the real treasure.

We first met one of the sisters at a market fair in Sam Neua.
The fair had brought together artisan producers from across Houaphan Province and after a quick conversation Veo and I decided we should visit their village.
The drive in was beautiful.
Rice was being harvested in one field and planted in another.
Two rice seasons.
One valley.
When we arrived, what struck us wasn't just the textiles.
It was the people behind them.
Three generations working together.
A self-taught designer who has been drawing patterns since she was a child.
A husband who left his government job to join the family business.
Young people learning skills and building a future close to home.
They've introduced block printing alongside traditional batik techniques, allowing them to produce more while keeping the character of their designs.
The conversation stayed with us for the rest of the drive.
Too often we talk about preserving traditions.
This family reminded us that traditions also need to evolve.
Otherwise they disappear.
Some of the pieces pictured here followed us home and are now available at Ock Pop Tok.

Following the Threads | Houaphan 2026

The sun was setting over Xam Tai when we turned off towards Ban Dow.
By the time we arrived, it was dark.
We followed the clues and found Mae Thao Mai Souk, who raises silkworms in her village.
She moved there as a child.
She married there.
Raised her family there.
Worked there.
Veo asked if she'd ever travelled beyond Houaphan.
She smiled.
No.
Would you like to?
Her face lit up.

Yes.

On the drive back to Xam Tai, Veo turned to me.
We need to bring her to Luang Prabang.
She should see the Living Crafts Centre.
That conversation is now a plan.
Later this year we'll invite Mae Thao Mai Souk, together with a small group of women from her village, to Luang Prabang.
Not as visitors.
As fellow artisans.
Bringing makers together to exchange ideas, build confidence and connect with new markets has always been part of how we work.
In 2020, inspired by the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, we created our own Ock Pop Tok Folk Art Market—a place where artisans from across Laos meet, learn from one another and share their work with the public.
We'll be doing it again later this year.
This year, we'd love to see some new faces from Houaphan there too.

The roads were tough.
The food was sooooo good.
Over seven days we ate forest squirrel, venison, silkworms, insects collected overnight, bamboo shoots, wild herbs, hot spring eggs, masala bamboo, naan bread and more varieties of jeow than I could keep track of.
The meal that stayed with us most was at Veo's cousin's house in Muang Hiem.
There was orlam cooked to perfection. The key was the pepperwood - so soft and so flavourful.
Seasonal Bamboo shoots - this season is Nor Lan.
Herbs that travelled less distance than we had that day.
One of the things we both love about Laos is how connected people still are to the land.
They know what grows where.
What is edible.
What is medicinal.
What is ready to harvest.
What should be left alone.
Veo spent most of dinner explaining where everything came from.
I spent most of dinner eating it.
The meal was so good we're now looking at our own orlam recipe at Silk Road Kitchen. Veo's cousin may have set a new benchmark.

One running joke on the trip was how often I wanted to stop the car.
Poor Joi.
His job was to get us from A to B before dark.
My job seemed to be asking him to pull over every five minutes.
A ridge line.
A village.
A huge tree.
A series of ridge lines.
Meanwhile Veo was usually looking at something completely different.
A medicinal plant.
A dye plant.
Wild raspberries.
A vine she'd seen before as a child.
We drove hundreds of kilometres together and often found ourselves looking in opposite directions.
At the end of the day we'd compare notes.
I'd have twenty photos of mountains.
Veo would have identified half the jungle.

( Lao Below ) Twenty years ago, a trader showed Veo a textile.
A 4 metre long Tai Daeng weaving with beee-uuu-tee-fulll supplementary and ikat work.
The question wasn't whether to buy it.
The question was:
Who made it?
At the time, we had a theory that textiles carried the identity of a place, culture and maker.
So Veo and I headed to Houaphan.
After days of winding roads, conversations in markets, shops and villages , we found the weaver.
She was a primary school teacher. Her loom sat upstairs in a stilted house overlooking rice fields and a lush valley.
A few weeks ago we were back on those same roads.
Different mission.
Same curiosity.
Still following threads.
Over the coming weeks we'll share stories from the journey — the people, textiles, food, landscapes and conversations that stayed with us.
