Multifunctional Building for the Sri Lanka Navy at Welisara done by Kumudu Munasinghe Architects

The initial idea behind the building was to merge the building with the water body while being a backdrop to the mesmerising water body. The organic shapes used in the building provides a unique feature with the boundless views of the water body.

The elegant interior used in the building enhances the quality of the ambience while the rustic design elements used at some parts of the building highlights the uniqueness of the design.

The Villa is built in line with the Tudor Style of Architecture which was popular in Colonial time in Sri Lanka.

The Tudor Style

In the 1920s and 1930s, the Tudor style was second only to the Colonial Revival style in residential popularity. Tudor buildings are easily identified by their steeply pitched roofs, often with a front facing gables or multiple gables, and half timbered wall surfaces. Not all Tudor buildings have half-timbering, but all share similar massing and Medieval English decorative details. These details might include an overhanging gable or second story, decorative front or side chimney, diamond shaped casement windows, or a round arched, board and baton front entry door. Tudor houses are almost always of stucco, masonry or masonry-veneered construction, often with ornamental stonework or brickwork. In some Tudor buildings the roofs curve over the eaves to imitate medieval thatching, or the roof line itself curves from peak to cornice to suggest a medieval cottage. Often picturesque and charming, Tudor style buildings, mansions and more common homes, can be found throughout the state.

The project was executed on a 280p land in the heart of Colombo, featuring an expansive residence with multiple lounges, bedrooms, kitchens, swimming pools, and other luxurious amenities. The architectural design adheres to the Neo-Classical tradition, a style the client was particularly enamored with. This approach is characterized by grandiose columns, symmetrical facades, and elaborate cornices that draw inspiration from classical Greek and Roman architecture. This mansion consists of 55,000 built area in total.

The design incorporates a strict adherence to classical proportions and symmetry, with a prominent use of pilasters, entablatures, and pediments that lend an air of timeless elegance to the structure. The entrance is marked by a stately portico, supported by Corinthian columns, leading into a grand foyer that immediately establishes the house's refined aesthetic.

Inside, the Renaissance influence is palpable, with interiors that feature intricate moldings, frescoed ceilings, and opulent marble flooring. The lounges are adorned with crystal chandeliers and classical sculptures, while the bedrooms are designed with luxurious fabrics and antique furnishings that evoke the grandeur of Renaissance palaces. The kitchens, though modern in functionality, are styled with classic cabinetry and ornate detailing that maintain the overall thematic coherence.

The swimming pools and outdoor areas are landscaped with precision, featuring manicured gardens and classical statues, creating a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces that reflect the meticulous attention to detail inherent in Neo-Classical architecture. This design not only fulfills the client's vision but also stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of classical architectural styles.
