I remember coming home from school and running straight to the factory.

Not to play. To watch.

Dissanayake would be at the lathe — a machine he had built himself, from parts he had sourced and assembled before we had the means to buy proper equipment. He was turning curtain rods, wall plaques, barrel-shaped buttons. Nothing that looked like furniture yet. But the precision was already there. The quiet, total focus. The sense that every component had a right answer and he knew it.

That was 1981 — his first year with us. Forty-five years on, the machines are more sophisticated. The products are different. But the eye is the same. When a young craftsman joins MM today, it is Dissanayake’s standard they are learning to meet.

Some things cannot be taught in a classroom. They can only be learned by watching someone who has spent a lifetime getting it right.

Forty-five years ago, Dissanayake walked into our workshop.

He has not left.

This week, we celebrate 45 years of one of the most remarkable craftsmen in Sri Lanka - the man who built machines with his own hands when we had none, who turned curtain rods and wall plaques into the foundation of a 50-year legacy, and whose eye for proportion and craftsmanship still shapes every piece that leaves our workshop today.

His story is our story.

Two chairs. One room. Fifty years of knowing how to make them.
The carved mahogany accent chairs in the Sky Mansions living room were not chosen to fill space - they were made to command it.
Hand-carved scrollwork on the back splat. Solid mahogany frame finished to Piano Lacquer standard. Upholstered in steel-blue velvet with channel detail at the apron.
Then, by the window - the same craftsmanship in a quieter mood. Cream linen, curved arm scrolls, the Colombo skyline framed behind. Two chairs, the same hands, completely different conversations.
