Today is World Oceans day. A day dedicated to raising awareness about negative impacts caused by human activity.
We at Fairy Gardens by Nevi are ocean lovers by nature. So this oceans day in particular is a painful one due to the immeasurable destruction caused to our beloved ocean by the recent incident involving the distressed xpress pearl vessel which was allowed to enter our waters and permitted to dock due to a chemical fire. (while carrying a cargo of 1,486 containers, including 350 tons of fuel oil and 25 tons of nitric acid)
It hurts our hearts as Islanders to watch in helpless horror as the events unfold : as the carcasses of marine animals and dead corals wash ashore along with chemical residue, plastic pellets and other debris from the ship wreck. We are living in constant dread of hearing of an inevitable oil leak from the sunken vessel, knowing that would be the final nail on the coffin of this disaster which will likely impact our ocean for a century to come.
So what we can do to help? What can do to prevent future destructions to our oceans, our land, our ecosystem and our heritage?
🔽
*Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
*Upcycle.
* Use products that are made using biodegradable material.
* Shop locally.
*Reduce single use plastics.
* Teach your children better and lead by example.
*Raise awareness whenever you get the platform to.
*And last but not least.. VOTE RESPONSIBLY and be mindful to appoint competent, educated and empathic leaders who are capable of making timely, wise decisions on behalf of the citizens they serve.
Make this a teachable moment for your little ones. Life began at the ocean. If the ocean dies, WE die.
Let that be the takeaway from our recent experience here in this paradise island. 🏝️
Love and peace.
