Water embodies a paradox—an element which sustains and nurtures life, yet possesses the ability to wreak havoc when unleashed in fury. This duality is inherently poetic and inspires us to use water mindfully in design – inviting pause and reflection, striking a delicate balance between serenity and wonder

In architectural design, stairs define more than vertical movement - they orchestrate spatial rhythm, embody sculptural form and demonstrate how visions of modern design transform function into an expressive language of form, balance, and artistic value.

Nestled in Dambulla’s dry zone, Wild Grass is a resort in quiet dialogue with its forested terrain and seasonal lake. Guest chalets are conceived as elevated pavilions, aligned with the tree canopy and angled for privacy, some opening toward views of Sigiriya Rock.

Wrapped in glazing on three and a half sides, the chalets create a 200-degree connection to the outdoors, immersing guests within the forest. Despite their openness, interiors stay naturally cool - deep roof overhangs, dense canopy cover, and insulated roofing reduce reliance on air-conditioning.

Materiality is restrained: timber ceilings, dark cement, muted tones, and sandwich panel roofing that blends into the canopy while ensuring thermal and acoustic comfort.

Reflecting Ruchi’s vision, the project is grounded, responsive, and shaped by attentiveness to site, climate, and the lived experience of space.

On a tight site, further challenged by steep gradients and a dramatic 20-foot drop from road to river, this 2010 project by CDS unfolds in measured descent. Two simple blocks - one anchored to the road, the other rising three stories towards the water - are separated by a courtyard that becomes the heart of the home. This void orchestrates light, air, and movement: a space where cross-ventilation animates living and sleeping areas, and a sculptural staircase traces the circulation around it.

The architecture resolves into clean lines and unembellished forms, yet behind the simplicity lies intricate coordination - each decision distilled to its purest expression. At the river’s edge, a deck and infinity pool lined in green slate merge seamlessly into the river beyond, extending the horizon. Shade and shelter are orchestrated with a recurring pergola of concrete and GI pipes, designed to carry a canopy of climbing plants.

A holiday home that lives in layers - framing wide, uninterrupted views of the river from every room.

There’s a certain poetry in the in-between. Stacks of material waiting to become something, shadows cast on unfinished walls, lines and textures not yet polished. These transitional frames tell a quieter story: of potential, of process, of place in progress. Sometimes, it’s the raw that feels most real.

Designed as a holiday retreat with the flexibility to evolve into a full-time residence, this Ruskin Island home embraces the unhurried rhythms of lakefront living for a large extended family. Durable, earthy finishes provide a cool refuge from the tropical heat, while deep verandahs frame uninterrupted horizons over the water.

A project executed by Ruchi’s team under the CDS banner. The spatial journey begins at the entrance, passes through a tranquil courtyard anchored by a reflective waterbody, and flows into the lake-facing living areas drawing the surrounding landscape into the heart of the home. Even rooms without direct views remain connected to the lake, immersed in the sense of place that threads through every space.

White is not the absence, but the presence of all color. Light, texture, and reflection shape its character, revealing countless shades. It’s a quality we often explore in our work, using white to let space and form speak through light.

Villa Victoria, Talpe
A Coastal Icon - Reimagined
Originally conceived in the 1970s by the renowned Australian architect Bruce Fell-Smith as a family retreat, Villa Victoria stands as an iconic piece of architecture nestled under the swaying coconut palms of Sri Lanka’s southern coast in Talpe.

Over the years, the villa changed ownership and was repurposed as a bed-and-breakfast. Eventually, it fell into disrepair. In 2015, the villa was reimagined by Ruchi’s studio, who were commissioned by its new owners to breathe new life into the property. The studio’s approach focused on preserving the villa’s strong structural core and its central sit out ,an area that carried the heart and soul of the original design while reworking the spatial layouts and upgrading its finishes and fixtures. Thoughtful additions were made to enhance the flow of natural light, maximize sea views, and complement the villa’s original aesthetic, creating a harmonious balance between old and new.

Nearly a decade later, in 2024, the villa was once again renovated to meet the evolving standards of modern hospitality. This second phase of restoration expanded its facilities and introduced new experiences without disturbing the delicate equilibrium established in the previous renovation. Semi-outdoor spaces were seamlessly incorporated, designed in a way that they receded into the landscape, offering a sense of openness while maintaining the villa’s tranquil and timeless atmosphere.

Today, Villa Victoria stands as a living testament to tropical modernism. It holds the essence of its original spirit while effortlessly blending into the contemporary demands of luxury hospitality. The villa remains a place where history, design, and nature converge to offer an exceptional experience for both its guests and the environment that surrounds it.

Mood boards play a crucial role in our design process. This is where we first combine materials, colors, and textures into a cohesive palette that guides all future design choices. More than just an initial visualization tool, creating mood boards is a tactile, creative activity that often leads to surprising and inspiring combinations.
