In the solo exhibition “Hunger Games,” artist Kristians Brekte invites viewers to explore the contemporary Shadow.

From September 24th to November 14th, the Maxim Boxer Gallery will host the exhibition “Hunger Games.” The artist, Kristians Brekte, has been known since the beginning of his career as a trickster of his time, challenging boundaries and bringing forth uncomfortable and emotionally charged themes. In his latest works, he addresses the rejected and marginalized aspects of society, shining a light on our divisions, suffering, and loneliness. The neon sign in the gallery window doesn’t lie—these are Hunger Games, and not everyone will emerge victorious. The mirror raised by the trickster may wound those who lack inner strength. But for the courageous, the artist offers a face-to-face confrontation with their personal and collective Shadows.

Carl Gustav Jung, the founder of analytical psychology, defines the Shadow as part of the Ego—a side of the self that one would never show to the world, a side that one does not wish to acknowledge. It holds all that is dark and forgotten, not just on an individual level but collectively as well. The rejected aspects of our personalities are pushed into the unconscious and later unconsciously projected onto others, allowing one to maintain the illusion of their own perfection while seeing the other as a monster. By avoiding our Shadow, we strive for righteousness, yet we remain incomplete. This incompleteness seeps into our lives, relationships, and decisions.

In this exhibition, Kristians Brekte does not reject the Light; he merely reduces it, giving the Shadow its due portion of irony, wit, and complexity. He continues to utilize recognizable signs of consumer culture and social symbols, intricately weaving threads of harsh reality into his works. The exhibition showcases a diverse array of objects alongside watercolor paintings. In these traditionally delicate watercolors, vibrant figures from the streets of Riga are depicted—lost souls who wander among us. Sometimes we help them; other times we learn to ignore them. Brekte places them in the communal space, reminding us of our own prayers. But in this twilight, no true higher powers are present. Only frauds remain, offering games of chance or seemingly ready to attack. We have no choice but to rely on ourselves, to boldly explore the society around us, and to answer the age-old question: “Who are we?”

Taču neona izkārtne galerijas skatlogā nemelo, šīs ir Bada spēles, un ne visi izies kā uzvarētāji. Garā vājos, trikstera paceltais spogulis, iespējams, ievainos. Drosmīgos mākslinieks aicina aci pret aci sastapties ar personīgo un kolektīvo Ēnu.

Analītiskās psiholoģijas pamatlicējs, Karls Gustavs Jungs Ēnu definē kā daļu no Ego, kā seju, ko cilvēks nekad nerādītu apkārtējai pasaulei, kā seju, kuru pats nevēlas atzīt. Tā nes visu tumšo, aizmirsto, turklāt ne tikai individuālo, bet arī kolektīvo. Noraidītie personības aspekti tiek izstumti bezapziņā, un vēlāk neapzināti projicēti uz ārpusi, ļaujot cilvēkam saglabāt priekšstatu, ka viņš ir nevainojams, savukārt, viņa raidītās projekcijas nesējs - briesmonis. Kristians Brekte izstādē nenoliedz Gaismu, viņš to tikai reducē, piešķirot Ēnai arī savu devu ironijas, asprātības un daudznozīmības. Viņš turpina izmantot atpazīstamas patērētājkultūras zīmes un sociālus tēlus, mākslas darbos filigrāni ieaužot smagās realitātes pavedienus. Izstādē līdztekus eksistē objektu daudzveidība un akvareļglezniecība. Tradicionāli trauslajās ūdenskrāsās fiksēti spilgti tēli no Rīgas ielām - zudušās dvēseles, kas bez orientieriem klejo mums blakus. Dažkārt mēs viņiem palīdzam, citkārt iemācāmies viņus neredzēt. Brekte iekļauj viņus koptelpā, un neviļus mēs atceramies par savām lūgšanām. Taču mijkrēslī patiesu augstāko spēku nav. Šeit sastopami vien krāpnieki, kas piedāvā iesaistīties veiksmes spēlēs vai acīmredzami gatavi mums uzbrukt. Mums neatliek nekas cits kā vien paļauties pašiem uz sevi un drosmīgi iepazīt sabiedrību mums apkārt, lai pilnvērtīgi atbildētu uz mūžseno jautājumu: “Kas mēs esam?”.
