Artisan Burmese Teak Wood Furniture

Our Story

Our story starts in 1999, when U Hla Thaung returned to Yangon and saw the unfortunate decline of traditional Burmese craftsmanship. Where has the fine details that once were renowned throughout the whole of Asia gone? What happened to the likes of famous Burmese treasures from Anawratha’s reign or the Konbaung Dynasty?

Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in early 20th century America, that celebrated fine craftsmanship and construction over mass production, U Hla Thaung decided he will bring a similar movement back to Myanmar with the establishment of Idea Woodsmith. Since then, for the past 20 years, Idea Woodsmith has been furnishing homes all over the world with fine solid teak wood furniture. Made up of local le-tha-ma (craftsmen) passionate about the art of woodworking, Idea takes pride in creating the finest quality pieces that are both aesthetic yet lasting.

Craftsmanship Philosophy

We believe above all else in true craftsmanship. Woodworking is so much more than assembling wooden parts. To us, it is about understanding the nature of wood, respecting the grains and characteristics of the lumber, and putting together the best quality pieces that both the woodworkers and home owners can be proud of.

Solid Teak Wood Furniture

Teak has been a prized lumber for millennia due to its amazing durability, beautiful grains, and lasting properties. Since the 7th century, the wealthy and powerful have used teak to embellish their residences while world explorers built ships with teak wood. Because of the natural oils found in teak wood that prevent dry rot, teak makes excellent outdoor furniture though being beautiful complements to the indoors as well. Teak no doubt deserves its renown.

Our customers range from furniture connoisseurs to everyday people who value investing in well-constructed solid wood furniture. While modern furniture uses mainly plywood and fiberboards that may last a few years, solid wood furniture can last decades and even worn out pieces have the appeal of being ‘rustic’. Since inception, we have used recycled Burmese teak wood to help conserve our precious teak forests and contribute to sustainable consumption of teak wood.

Supporting Sustainability

We are also conscious about the environmental impact furniture making has and do our part in manufacturing sustainably by only using reclaimed teak wood. Our lumber comes from the salvaged pieces of demolished old buildings and structures around Myanmar. These pieces are carefully mended and cut to get a second life as beautiful furnishings for your home.
