Super Typhoon Sinlaku Strengthens to 175 mph; Track Shifts Toward Tinian and Saipan

SAIPAN — Super Typhoon Sinlaku intensified overnight to maximum sustained winds of 175 mph and the latest track has shifted northward, with passage now forecast near or over Tinian and Saipan, according to HSEM Bulletin 8A issued at 5 a.m. Monday.

The storm was located 345 miles southeast of Saipan as of 4 a.m., moving north-northwest at 10 mph. HSEM said Sinlaku is expected to maintain that intensity through Tuesday as it approaches the Marianas. The storm may move into the island chain as a Category 4 or Category 5 typhoon.

Tropical storm-force winds are expected to reach Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan this evening or tonight. Typhoon-force winds are forecast to begin reaching Rota, Tinian and Saipan Tuesday or Tuesday afternoon. Typhoon-force winds extend 60 miles from the center, with tropical storm-force winds reaching up to 275 miles to the northeast and 215 miles elsewhere.

A Typhoon Warning remains in effect for Saipan, Tinian and Rota. Typhoon Condition II remains in effect for Saipan, Tinian and Rota. Tropical Storm Condition III remains in effect for Pagan and Alamagan. Residents of Agrihan were advised to carefully monitor the storm.

Residents should already be in their shelter or safe location. Conditions will deteriorate rapidly through today.

The CNMI EOC State Warning Point can be reached at 670-237-8000 or 670-664-8000. NOAA Weather Radio is available at 211. The next bulletin is scheduled for 8 a.m., followed by an intermediate bulletin at 11 a.m.
