TIPS ON STARTING YOUR SMALL BUSINESS

1.A business starts with a business idea
2.Have two or three business ideas, do some research on feasibility of the ideas looking at your location, people's tests and needs, your budget etc
3.Zero in to one business idea after your research. Start with one that is feasible interms of people's tests ,needs ,capital requirements
4.Follow your passion. Make sure you love what you are doing. It's good to do a business you like, in the area of your talents or passions
5.Find out if the business is legal in Malawi and legal requirements. Eg register your business.
6.Start small. When u start small if it's not working u can change to another business easily. And usually u may try one or two businesses before u nail it
7.Give urself an allowance or salary so that u don't go overboard in ur spending. Let not money rule over you, rather ndalama uziyilamulira
8.Don't just copy what your neighbor is doing or selling. Do ur own min researcch. I remember years back, we had a wave of buying shares for companies. Many bought shares including myself. It's now more than 15 years but I never received any dividend and last year I just heard our names were in print media encouraging us to sell the shares at no profit at all. So please do ground research.....tisamangotengeka
9.Network in your industry. Deliberately have business connections. You are not an island. Find out who are other players in your industry

A JOURNEY TO SELF EMPLOYMENT AND RETIREMENT - A dedication to those in their 40s and early 50s.

In our first article posted on my fb page, I focussed on youths planning for their self employment. In this article it's a dedication to those in their 40s and early 50s on your journey to self employment and retirement.

The first step to self employment is planning. Start NOW planning for your retirement and self employment . Don't wait until you are 55 or 60! Set goals for your life and every year and let God help you execute them.

Save and invest. If you have not started saving, start saving and seriously saving and invest NOW. If you already started saving, invest now so that you live a comfortable life even in your 60s.Take a loan for investment and not consumption. There are companies or organisations that will give their employees loans for consumable goods tying them for 15 or even 20 years. Yes you will drive a poshy car but on loan that is traumatizing you. For me it's better to have a Toyota Corolla that you paid cash and sleep in peace than drive a poshy 4x4 Hilux on loan that is giving u sleepless nights.

Live within your means.Know that you are unique and special and you don't have to to copy cat. Many of us end up living beyond our means because we want to live a life that our neighbor or friend is living. Walk your lane. Know that there's a designated path for you aligned by God and be You.You can only invest if you refuse to be destructed by what others have.

If you want to be self employed before 60, you need to take a bold step and decision of seeing yourself doing something that you have always wanted to do, at the same time making money out of it for a living. . Retiring early say before 50 or 55 requires boldness. I was in a comfortable job, travelled outside the country often. My contract came to end and I was supposed to express willingness or no willingness for renew my contract. I chose the later. I knew this was my time to pursue what I had always wanted to do and had not enough time to do. The destiny and purpose for life God put in me superceded the monetary gains. I had to choose either I live for me and family or live beyond me and my family and impact lives. Don't live a life of regret without doing what you know is the reason you are here on earth. Don't wait until you have no strength in your old age to pursue your dreams and passions. TIME is NOW!

Pursue the God given purpose for your life. Each one of us has a reason why we exist...that's a purpose for your life. Many walk through life without knowing it. But as for you reading this article you will fulfill your purpose on this earth. Only God reveals to us the reason for our existence. If you don't know it, ask your Creator, He will show you. In our next article we will talk about this deeply on some pointers that can help you know your passions and purpose for your life. The feeling of working up in the morning and doing what you enjoy and you were created to do is amazing and fulfilling. See life beyond monetary gains and your family. Impact your community and beyond.Live a fulfilled life!

In the past, we used to say that children will take care of us when we grow old. Unfortunately, the opposite is happening. Due to a number of factors including the high cost of living we are in now, it is difficult for children to take care of their parents the way they would want because of hard economic times. So the sooner we realize this the better. We don't want to grow old with bitterness because our children are not able to take care of us. Let's start preparing now for life after work.

Self employment starts with a business idea. Start won'king on your business idea or social enterprise idea NOW.What do you think you can offer to this world that people need? What are you passionate about , which can be turned to a business idea. It can also be a social Enterprise idea with a charity goal.Start small and learn from it and grow.Whatever our hands find to do , we should do it with all our hearts. Follow us on this page so that you don't miss my topic on Starting a Business .

Jump into early retirement and self employment when you have made savings of not less than 6 months to keep you and family going. Some businesses may take a while before you realize profits. That's why some start a business as a side hustle while working and jump into early retirement when they are comfortable.

Persistence . Temptations will come to look back but we must persist and be focussed. We must reach a point where even when am offered a lucrative employment contract you still remain firm on your decision despite huddles you may face.Focus on the greater good you are pursuing.

Manage your time. As we are in our 40s and 50s, time is not much on our side for some tasks. For those things you know you were CREATED TO DO and are a reason why you are here on earth, make time to do them. Don't waste time in things that will not add value to your destiny. We should also tame our appetites for social media especially on things that may destroy us not build us. Let's use social media for a greater good ie marketing your products or brand, encouraging others etc

Don't live like an island. Network. Somebody once said business is about connections. Nature the social and business relationships you have as they are a stepping stone to exploits.Look for someone who can be a mentor in the field u are venturing into. There are always people who have gone before us and have excelled in the area we are new in. Let's learn from them and tap ideas from them.

Continue to learn everyday from others. We should be learning everyday. Everyone has something to offer. We should not despise people. We can also learn from various gatherings, events or workshops organized in the area we are interested in.

Don't compare your life with that of others. It helps one to be focussed

Walk with God your Creator. There is no better thing than walking with God. Believe in His Word. God desires that we walk this life through His Son Jesus, not alone. ('This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 1 John 4:9).It's God's desire that we depend on His wisdom, strength, guidance, light etc given freely to us through His Son. let's strive to live at peace with ourselves and others around us. We might have it all according to the standards of this world, but it's all vanity and meaningless without a relationship with the Creator.

I RETIRED AT 47 YRS FOR SELF EMPLOYMENT

I know this is scary to many of us. And many in our 30s ,40s we have not even given it a thought to be self employed..we want to work for that organisation until our strength is gone. Self employment is a decision one makes not in a day, it starts way back. Many of us are thinking of working for that organisation or company until all our strength is gone with old age and retire at 60. My humble question is, when are you going to pursue your God given dreams, passions, purpose for your life? At 60?

I would like to talk to both the younger generation who have just finished school and looking for a job ,and to someone who is in their 40s or 50s that it's not too late to think of self employment.

To the youths, when I was in my late 20s , I made the decision to become self employed before my 50th birthday. The Decision came about when I saw some elderly people working and struggling at an old age for food. It made me wonder what happened in their prime yrs. Could this have been avoided? I questioned myself. The thought also came about with the desire to do what God had put in me when I have the strength. Yes even in my late 20s early thirties I knew my passion, and my reason for existence. This did not just come.....a deliberate choice to walk with God helped me know my purpose in life. My heart cries when I see a very poor person, it hurts me and my desire is to uplift someone. My heart cries out when I see hopelessness and I knew I was called to give hope. With my own experiences of trying moments, God has also helped me to reach out to others.

So to you a youth, this is what I can say:

Start planning for self employment in your late 20s and early 30s.Dont wait until your strength is gone.

With the little money you make working, start saving and investing it. Make a deliberate decision not to consume 100% of your money. I made up my mind in my early years of being employed to save. Yes I started saving at 27 yrs old, at least 30% of my earnings. It was a bold step because it involved self denial and sacrifice, at this age, your friends are buying the latest fashions and toys in town. Be focussed.

For you young one, who is looking for a Job but can't find one, don't despair and don't waste time. Start your business NOW and start small. By the time you are in the 40s you will not be where you started. You will be an expert in your field and somebody the community can look up to. Check me on my upcoming article on how to start a business for more insights.

Don't just save start investing in something. If you just save ,there is your enemy devaluation, and that money will be useless sooner or later. Think of a business idea you can run with while you are working as a side hustle...that which will not require much time from you because u need to give ur employer your full attention and time. For me ,at that time I choose to invest in real estates. In our time business options/ideas were few because very few people talked about doing business in the early 2000s. For you young one, entrepreneurship is the current discourse...everyone is talking about it and there are many business ideas and opportunities out there.Explore them.

Be ready to live a modest life not extravagant life. Be focussed on your saving investing mission. Of course don't entirely deny yourself a living.Make sure you and your family eat well and dress modestly while you pursue your passions.

Know that you are unique and special. Do you know that there's is none like you on this earth? None who has the eyes , hair, toes like you. You have your own footprint.Live ur life and walk your path not somebody's. This helps you to be focussed. Know who you are by having a connection with your Creator. Pursue those God given dreams and passions in you. One would ask , how will I know my purpose for life? I will tackle this topic in my future posts. Follow us on this page so that you don't miss it.

Don't compare your life with another person. Know where you are going and get focussed. Yes, as you save, you will have to deny yourself some luxuries for that moment and postpone for later. Rent a house that you can afford to pay and also make savings. Don't live in a big house that takes 50% of your salary...this is a foolish business decision.Yes others may laugh at you living in that small house but just laugh it off because you know what you are doing...saving and investing mission.Live within your means.dont compare your life with another person because you are on a mission to become self employment one day and even before you are 50 years old!

Be a person who is learning continuously. Have the appetite to learn more about business. If possible attend events as your side hustle . Learn from others who are ahead of you. Have mentors in your life, not only in business but also spiritual life for life is not only material,it should be balanced.

Life is worthless having it all ...the riches of this world but no relationship with your Creator who is ready to walk with you and guide you all days of your life. Make a decision to walk with God. Make a decision to depend on the wisdom of God not man. He will show you the purpose for your life and help you live it.God will sustain you even when you are hopeless. Be humble and know that the strength you have, the life you have, the riches you have are all gifts from God. That's why we need to depend on Him and worship Him.

Earlier, I said I will talk to the youths and also those in their 40s and above. This article focusses on the youths. For those above 40 ,let's meet in my next article.

As we are geared to become a producing economy, we should aim at production both in agriculture sector and manufacturing.

Yes it's good to increase production in the agriculture sector, but my question is are we going to export it raw? That is why Manufacturing should also be a priority for our country so that we have the needed forex to run our country and create wealth.
