That is why here at the Loaf & Farm, we labour to bring you loaf cakes, bread, garden produce, and eggs that are made or raised with 100% heart.

It's always interesting to see how other cultures practise gardening. There are lots of things we can learn from them and experiment with in our own local setting.

While the use of plastic mulch isn't ideal, it's a compromise that we have had to make in our own setting as well. It helps shave off time needed for w**ding and the use of w**d killer.

What is interesting is their layout. By planting directly in the ground instead of raised beds, they can freely restructure their layout as needed. Unfortunately, our use of drip lines have locked us in place.

Another is their incorporation of trees as part of the garden rather than framing the garden. It's a great idea that helps bring beneficial diversity into the garden.

This was the first time ever that we had a viable watermelon. Against AI's advice, we planted this too late in the year and it fruited during the rainy season. Juicy, aromatic, but absolutely tasteless. But the boy is happy, that's a win.

Taking Basil to the market today. He's been the alpha for the last five years, and so it's about time to say goodbye. Our junior rooster, his son, will step up to replace him.

As I walked him to the market, everyone was amazed at how large he was. Our usual stall refused to process him as they were afraid he'd wreck their machine. The stall that did accept him marvelled at how solid he was. Even his bones were significantly heavier and harder.

But Basil won't be gone. He lives on as sustenance for the family, strengthening the weak.

Happy bees with pockets full of pollen are a treat to watch. Yet in spite of all the flowers, it's a wonder why there aren't more bees.

Now that they're all dried out, it's time for the brooder.

This is a simple one that we threw together with stuff from Mr. DIY and from the old brooder. The translucent tub makes it easier for us to monitor the chicks, while the ni**le waterer reduces contamination and spills.

Bedding is soil from the garden mixed with bedding from the chicken coop. This helps to inoculate the chicks with coccidia oocysts from the older birds, helping to build immunity. The garden soil provides the general gut flora and mini bugs that they will learn to eat.

Once they're a bit older, we'll try and sneak them under a broody hen and see if we can get them adopted.

Have you ever seen a chick hatching from its egg? After all these years of raising chickens, we've never actually seen it happen. We just wake up one morning and "Tadaaa!" Being able to see this one in action is truly heartwarming.

Our next goal on the farm bucket list is to catch a hen laying an egg.

Here's a whole bed of a Double Zahara zinnia variety called "Raspberry Ripple". Lots of happy flowers that remind us of ice cream from the 90s, another happy memory.

This round we made it a point to plant lots of flowers to encourage pollinators. On a good morning, we get to watch bees and butterflies flit and buzz from flower to flower, while our fruiting veg enjoy the extra fertility boost from our busy visitors.

Quite a pleasant surprise after all the rain and gloomy weather. The Sugar Baby watermelon vine had begun to take a hold on the trellis, but we didn't think fruit would set so quickly since the weather wasn't very conducive for bees and butterflies, but, Lo!

Let's try another go at hatching chicks!

With the senior batch of chickens now over five years old, we're seeing productivity dip, though eggs are getting bigger. Our last hatch produced a roo, so Basil, current boss, will get retired eventually. Hopefully we can get all 8 to hatch.

When we first started gardening, these French Breakfast radishes were a staple. However, they quickly took a backseat as many couldn't find a way to make this little pungent bomb palatable.
Recently, it's made a come back in our garden because it's a quick space filler, and we've also learnt more ways to make it taste better.

This early batch is now brining for a tasty 甘酢漬け (amazudzuke). The leaves also make a good salad component, especially with a light ponzu dressing.
