REIMAGINING THE RIVER — KUALA LUMPUR
What if the river is not something we turn our backs on, but something we come to the city to experience?
This is a design proposal for the area near Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, exploring a different relationship between the city, its people and its river.
At the heart of Kuala Lumpur is the Sungai Klang, historically connected to the Sungai Gombak, the two rivers that shaped the origin and identity of Kuala Lumpur.
Yet, as cities grow, rivers can easily become infrastructure that we simply pass by.
This proposal asks: what if we bring people back to the river?
Instead of treating the river merely as a drainage or flood management infrastructure, the riverfront can become an urban public space, a place to walk, sit, meet, relax, watch performances, enjoy the water, take a boat and simply experience the presence of water within the city.
The design creates multiple layers of interaction with the river, from the waterfront promenade and landscaped terraces to spaces that allow people to come closer to the water.
The intention is simple:
Make the river visible.
Make the river accessible.
Make the river enjoyable.
And most importantly, make the river part of everyday Kuala Lumpur life.
A great city is not defined only by its buildings and roads.
Sometimes, it is defined by how its people experience its river.
