Most Peranakan tiles are admired on walls and floors.
We wondered what would happen if they could glow instead.
The Jubin Lamp began with hours spent studying heritage tile motifs found across Penang, Malacca and Singapore. Rather than printing the colours directly, we first sculpted every tile in white. Only when the lamp is switched on do the colours reveal themselves, much like sunlight bringing stained glass to life.
Even the top of the lamp draws inspiration from the ventilation blocks found in old Malaysian homes—a small detail that quietly ties the whole design together.
It's our way of celebrating the architecture and craftsmanship that make our streets so memorable.
Which tile would you choose?
Before the colours come to life, every panel begins as a sculptural white tile. We wanted the lamp to feel beautiful even when it's switched off—almost like a piece of ceramic art sitting quietly in your home.
Rather than printing coloured patterns onto the surface, we designed the tiles so light does the work. As the lamp turns on, the colours slowly reveal themselves, transforming the entire piece.
We didn't want to repeat the same tile on every side. Instead, the Jubin Lamp combines four different Peranakan-inspired motifs, so every angle offers something new to discover.
The details don't stop at the tiles. The top of the lamp is inspired by the ventilation blocks found in old Malaysian homes—a subtle nod to the architecture that quietly shaped our everyday lives.
