The human charm present in Chinese decoration is unknown to the Malay. But it is doubtful whether this should count as a loss, for human or other animal forms are not well reproducible on a small scale in silver, and by their absence we gain immensely in another direction, for the Malay in avoiding absolutely all animal forms has succeeded by alteration and adaptation in making the natural forms of plant life subservient to his wants and thus producing excellent decorative art.

HMS Malaya was one of five Queen Elizabeth-class battleships built for the Royal Navy during the 1910s. Shortly after commissioning in early 1916, she participated in the Battle of Jutland as part of the Grand Fleet. Other than that battle, and the inconclusive Action of 19 August, her service during the First World War mostly consisted of routine patrols and training in the North Sea

'The Enthronement ceremony at a Malay wedding' 1900

A Malay bridegroom and bride, during the Bersanding, or enthronement ceremony, at which they receive the homage of a one-day king and queen. This illustration shows the transformation of the ceremony under Mohammedan influence, the bridegroom being a Haji, or Mecca pilgrim, and therefore dressed in the turban and pilgrim's robes. For the same reason there are none of the typical Malayan "rainbow hangings."

Traditional Malay attire for men is the baju melayu, a loose tunic which is worn over trousers and usually accompanied with a sarong called a sampin which is wrapped around the hips. It is also often accompanied with a songkok or cap.

Malay women wear the baju kurung, a knee-length blouse worn over a long skirt. The blouse is long-sleeved and collarless, while the skirt, called a kain, has pleats on one side.A headscarf is sometimes worn with this. Another popular traditional costume is the kebaya, a more tight-fitting two-piece dress.
