✂️ My Sewing Journey: Part 2

"The Accidental Tailor from Buttons to Blouses"

✈️ Coimbatore Chronicles
On April 26, 2025, I flew to Coimbatore with stars in my eyes and fabric dreams in my head. My first school didn’t go as expected—the machines were outdated, the terms flew over my head, and even though I spoke the language, tailoring jargon felt like a foreign tongue, and with me looking like a lost tourist. So, I packed my scissors and moved on.
That’s when I found Athena’s Fashion, Coimbatore, run by the wonderful Ms. Suba, who patiently showed me the art of saree blouses, kurtis, and pants. Two months later, I felt like I had levelled up from “Button Survivor” to “Blouse Beginner.” Finally, I felt like I was stitching closer to my dream.

💻 Back Home, Online & Ongoing
The hunger didn’t stop there. Back in Malaysia, I continued with online classes under the vibrant and generous Ms. Anu of Anu Academy. And guess what? The classes are still ongoing as I write this. Because let’s be honest—“Learning never exhausts the mind.” (Thanks, Leonardo da Vinci—you clearly never dealt with tangled bobbins).

🍼 A Baby in Sewing Years
So, am I a sewing expert now? Not at all! I’m still a one-year-old baby (2nd Sept 2024 – 2nd Sept 2025) in this world of threads and thimbles. But compared to when I couldn’t even sew a straight line, I’ve come a long way. At least now, I can proudly stitch my own saree blouses and maybe even for others.
Every teacher I’ve had added their own unique stitch to my journey, and for that, I’m grateful.
After all, “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.” And in sewing, even the dictionary probably comes with a stitched cover.

✨ The journey continues, one stitch at a time. And if all else fails, at least I’ll never run out of drawstring bags! 😉

✂️ My Sewing Journey: Part 1

*The Accidental Tailor from Buttons to Blouses*

It all started with a simple drawstring bag. A friend (and customer) had ordered one of my craft items, and I thought, “Instead of a boring old box, why not a cute bag?” Easy idea, right? Except there was one tiny problem—I had never done any serious sewing in my life. Unless, of course, you count stitching a button at 2 a.m. worried it might fall off your favourite shirt before an important meeting. But curiosity stitched me in (pun fully intended). What I thought would be a one-time adventure turned into a whole new world.

👜 The Bag Lady Phase
One class with patient and wise Ms. Angela of Two Moles changed everything. I went in just to learn a drawstring bag. Guess what? I walked out having learned not one, but four types of bags and purses, palazzo pants, and even a circular skirt. Talk about going in for tea and leaving with a full buffet!

📐 Patterns, Patience & Plenty of Headaches
Next came the serious stuff—pattern drafting. Under the guidance of Ms. Zoe, Alah & Ahmed of Zoe at Maison Artelier, I learned how to customise designs and sizes. Trust me, pattern drafting is like Sudoku for fabric lovers; it takes math, patience, and the ability to stare at a piece of paper for two hours without crying. But oh, when it finally comes together, you feel like Einstein—with scissors.

👗 Saree Blouse Adventures
Then came the big push from friends and family: “Why not learn saree blouses? You’ll save a fortune!” And I thought, “Well, considering how much I spend on these blouses, that’s not a bad idea!” They had a point—I spend more on blouses than the sarees themselves. But finding a good teacher at a reasonable price locally was like searching for a needle in a haystack. (And trust me, I now know how needles feel.) So off I went, to India—because if you’re going to learn, why not learn from the source?
