Wole Soyinka: An Icon At 90!💪🏾💐📖

Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka the man popularly referred to as Wole Soyinka is Arguably the Most Prominent consistent Nigerian that has ever lived in Modern History.

All through his adult life, the world acclaimed playwright and Nobel Laurette has maintained a reputation that has seen him staying relevant all through the political journey of the entity called Nigeria.

Wole Soyinka was born in the city of Abeokuta, Nigeria. He is a native of Isara Remo and the second child of 6 children. His father Samuel Ayodele Soyinka held a prominent position in the community as an Anglican minister and headmaster, hence young Soyinka was privileged to have access to radio and electricity at home while growing up.

In his last year at University, he worked on a short play for the Nigerian Broadcasting Service. Soyinka moved to England in 1954 and continued to pursue his education at the University of Leeds, under the tutelage of Wilson Knight and became the editor of ‘The Eagle’, the University magazine.

‘A Dance of the Forests’, one of his best works was presented at the Nigerian Independence Day celebrations in 1960. It is regarded as one his most influential plays that proposed a new vision for Africa and was later, published by the Oxford University Press in London and New York.

By 1962, Soyinka had returned to Nigeria and joined the department of English at the Obafemi Awolowo University as a lecturer.

A cousin of late Nigerian Afrobeat music legend and social activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, it was clear activism was also in his genes as he frequently engaged in discussions on current affairs and spoke out against government censorship.

Soyinka resigned from his position at OAU in 1964 as a protest against the pro-governmental policies imposed by university authorities.

The same year he authored two of his dramatic pieces; ‘Before the Blackout’, ‘Kongi’s Harvest’ and a BBC radio play ‘The Detainee’.

Happy Birthday to a living legend.

with Déjà vu, a sensation of having previously experienced a present moment, often evokes a sense of familiarity and mystery. This phenomenon can be linked to the awakening of the soul, suggesting moments where our deeper consciousness aligns with our present awareness. When experiencing déjà vu, one might feel a brief connection to a larger, timeless existence, hinting at the soul's journey through various states of being. This alignment may serve as a reminder of the soul's continuity and its ongoing evolution, nudging us towards a greater understanding of our place in the universe and the interconnection with experiences.

Yoruba people would say "Ibi oju ba riran de, ibe gaan lopin irin ajo" Wherever the vision ends, there one's journey ends.

I am Michael Omotosho, Painter and textile artist and I believe strongly in vision and where it can lead us.

My paintings are stylized portraits with exaggerated features based on the traditional way of african portrayal of humans:
A disproportionately large head that symbolizes the African belief that the head plays a role in directing success and destiny. The seat of Wisdom; The bulging eyes, that signify vision;
Like the turtle, every man must stick out his neck if he wants to go forward, thus the elongated nose and neck. Thick lips because the mouth and the hand can never miss each other.

The prominent colors of the characters skin reflects its origin. Burnt umber, Yellow Ochre and Reds are used not only because it is the color of the black skin but because they are earth colors, found rich in the african soil.

They are not only paintings of the black people but also of the black origin, based on pigments, styles and representation.

This is my way of deeply connecting to Africa by utilizing the soil’s history to tell its story through my work.

"Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them"

The pandemic is shining an uncomfortable light on the fissures in society, and showing that empathy and collaboration are key in the journey ahead. Addressing consumer concerns over safety and hygiene will be paramount in re-designing the post-lockdown world.
