π¨ A long motivational post π¨
In recent times, I have been introduced to female architectural students to either mentor, inspire/encourage mainly through their parents, one is just starting, and 3 more are at different levels at different universities.
You would say what's so peculiar about that? Well, I find it interesting that young girls are interested in architecture because at some point in my career, I didnt think it was a profession ladies nowadays would be so interested in especially since we are in the Information technology era. Though I am a practicing female architect and a good one at that, my story and journey in the world of architecture hasn't been so smooth infact I was one of those that most people see back then and say "this one cannot last".
I remember when I gained admission to study architecture, I was a girlie-girl ,loving all the pink stuffs etc, I was quite fragile and was always falling sick due to the stress of study (believe me, Architecture is a very strenuous course). My journey into architecture was more of a divine orchestration because it was neither borne out of passion nor talent. My passion back then was to leave home by all means eventhough JAMB "jambed" me that year when I wanted to study medicine, I thought i wanted to be a doctor! But gained admission to study architecture at Federal Polytechnic Ede, though i didn't even remember the course i filled for the PolyJAMB. The only relevant talent I had was that drawing (artistic drawings, not technical drawing). I didnt even attend technical drawing classes in secondary school (remember I wanted to be a doc.) But right from primary school I would win prices for Art and that talent eventually proof useful to an extent when I found myself in Architecture school.
Back to the main discussion, parents come to me, and some ask directly or indirectly to know if I think their girl child would cope in this field. There was an instance I was going to advise that the girl had to be rugged, but I remember how I started my journey and just smiled and reassured them that they would be fine.
Conclusion in next post π
