Algaita: The Sound of Tradition

Algaita is a double reed woodwind instrument commonly used in traditional Hausa and Kanuri music in Northern Nigeria. The Algaita has a distinctive, nasal sound and is often played during celebrations and ceremonies.
It is associated with Royalty.

The Algaita is distinguished from these other instruments by its larger, trumpet-like bell.

[Fact]
Its sound can also be heard on these old records: Music from the Villages of Northeastern Nigeria. [Folkways, 1971]

This picture was taken in ABU Zaria during their cultural carnival in 2024.

A true highlight of Nigerian tourism.
