THE MOMENT THE SPACE IS FOR, Bonnie Amsterdam
A moment like this seems to have nothing to do with design and yet everything to do with it.
Emiel and his daughter Dahl, a chess board between them, surrounded by the warm light and layered walls of Bonnie, which softly embrace their time together without rushing the next move.

Bonnie is Studio Modijefsky's reinterpretation of the classic Amsterdam brown bar: not a reproduction, but a reinvention. Marble, wood, neon, tiles, terrazzo, textured glass, brass and vintage furniture: the familiar materials of a neighbourhood corner bar, reconsidered and put together with intention.

Bonnie is part of the Goudvisch family, a collection of venues each with their own identity but sharing the same warm, inviting character that defines their locations. The kind of place where a father and his daughter can sit down for a game of chess and forget about everything else.

A BENCH THAT CARRIES HISTORY, Hotel Rumour Leiden
Every detail in Hotel Rumour has a reason and this modern bench started its story back in the 17th century.

The building occupies the old carriage house at the foot of the Burcht van Leiden, and that history became the direct starting point for the design of for the entire project and the tailor-made banquette.

This bench encapsulates Studio Modijefsky's approach to new projects, especially when it allows drawing inspiration from the past. The storytelling behind it says everything: the height of the back seat follows the skyline of the hill the fort sits on, the base of the seating element is built from the different components of a carriage, translated into a refined structural composition. History is embedded in the furniture, bringing the past into the present with a new narrative of the space.

THE HEART OF THE HOME, Home Wilhelminalaan
At Home Wilhelminalaan, the kitchen is not just a kitchen: it is the space that connects the newly built wing with the living and dining room, the pivot around which the entire home organises itself.

Everything in this space is tailor-made, every function carefully integrated to match the way the owners actually live. The large windows celebrate the sunlight and beautifully frame the garden, while the doors open wide enough to merge the atmosphere between cooking inside and being outside.

The presence of warm oak, steel and the characteristic limestone that runs through the entire home gives a natural and organic consistency from room to room, so that nothing feels out of place and everything belongs together.

EYES OPEN, mosaic in Lucca, Italy
While travelling, keeping your eyes wide open can gift you some very unexpected inspiration, like this mosaic on a bar front in Lucca, Italy. Impossible not to be captured by the details of this still life of ch*****ne on ice, frozen in time on a facade that has probably been there for decades. The kind of thing you stumble upon while wandering and cannot walk past without stopping to admire.
For Studio Modijefsky this is a treasure. Inspiration comes from keeping eyes open and looking at what already exists around us through a different lens, especially when travelling. Looking at this piece of master craftsmanship only makes the desire stronger to one day build a bar with sensational mosaic details that feel like they have always been there, yet are tailored for exactly where they are.
A mosaic bar is definitely on the list.

EVERY LAYER FOR A REASON, Gitane Amsterdam

When you enter Gitane, you can feel that nothing is there by accident. The wall texture, the custom lights, the carefully composed combination of tiles, the tailor-made bench and tables: every element was designed specifically for this space, for this chef and for the food that would be served here.

The layers that bring it to life complement each other naturally: the vintage bistrot chairs found for the right feeling, and the artwork by a painter from the Côte d'Azur that gives the space its final, unexpected note.
Everything fits together like a puzzle: not because it was forced, but because it was thought through and built as a collective piece from the very beginning, with one clear concept in mind.

This is what Studio Modijefsky means by a space that breathes character.

EVERYTHING LOCAL, Blauwe Theehuis Amsterdam

Our friend Rufus Ketting is the perfect embodiment of Blauwe Theehuis in the Vondelpark: enthusiastic, welcoming and carrying a lot of b**rs. A lot.
He represents exactly the excitement and pride that Studio Modijefsky feels about having designed one of Amsterdam's landmarks, for the local people rooted in this city and in a location like the Vondelpark, which captures both the calm and the liveliness that define Amsterdam.

And as our friend here is reminding us, it also means having access to an incredible Amsterdam-brewed b**r. So incredible that apparently Rufus decided to carry all of them himself on the day Maeve Stam took this picture for our book Making Space.

A ROOM THAT CELEBRATES LIGHT, Home Wilhelminalaan

Right next to the main living room, this niche space was designed around one simple intention: to work with specific colours and shapes in order to let the light do the rest by entering through the large windows and bringing with it the movement of the nature outside.

Studio Modijefsky designed a custom sofa that wraps around the walls of the room, embracing the fireplace at its centre. The result is a corner that shifts with the hours, adapting to the needs of the owner: a spot to read in the morning light filtering through the linen blinds, or to settle into on a winter evening, surrounded by the rich textures of the upholstery and carpet. Every detail of the tailor-made piece follows the design language of the home: refined lines, considered proportions, small steps that echo the fireplace surround and the ceiling above.

Nothing here is off-the-shelf. The sofa by Starink & Kortenhorst and the window dressing by Home Couture by Bernie each bring their own materiality and intention, working in balance to complete this room.

ABOVE THE PARK, Blauwe Theehuis Amsterdam

Built in 1937 in the Nieuwe Bouwen style, the Dutch answer to Bauhaus, the Blauwe Theehuis has always been one of Amsterdam's most recognisable landmarks. And after the renovation by Studio Modijefsky, it is also the perfect spot for a drink and to linger in good company.

Frederik from Studio Molen and Rufus Ketting, who runs Blauwe Theehuis today, know this feeling well: standing together on the upper terrace with the Vondelpark spread out below, in an atmosphere of calm that comes from the constant conversation between the building and the park around it.

This photograph by Maeve Stam, taken for the Making Space book, captures exactly what makes this building so particular.
