A Tibetan patinated bronze sculpture of Yama Dharmaraja and Yami in embrace, representing the primordial (or mystical) union of wisdom and compassion, both standing on a buffalo reclining on a single lotus throne, late 19th century, ca 16 cm. high, 9.5 cm. wide and 5.5 cm. deep, the male deity Yama Dharmaraja representing compassion and skillful means ('upaya'), with a wide-spreading hairdo in which three skulls, his right knee bent, holding a scepter (a 'danda', symbol of reign) in his right hand, a long scarf hanging from his shoulders, in front of him his female companion Yami representing insight or wisdom ('prajna'), wearing a small crown, her left knee bent, her right hand resting on his left forearm, her left arm on its way to embrace him.
