“Monaco - Monte Carlo”, made by Alphonse Mucha, printed in Paris in 1897 by F. Champenois. Signed in the print at the lower left. Size: 108 x 75 cm.

With his design, soft colouring and astonishingly subtle drawing, Mucha became the single most famous and influential artist of the Art Nouveau movement in Europe.

Between 1896 and 1902, Mucha achieved his greatest graphic productivity and his best work dates from this period, including the poster “Monaco - Monte Carlo”, the forerunner of all luxury tourist posters.

The “Mucha girl” is central to many of his creations. She attracts us hypnotically with an untold yet irresistible vision, an unspoken promise - healthful, seductive, uplifting and erotically vulnerable. Her look is hazy, as if she just arose, portrayed at the moment of awakening, wavering between the viewer’s adoration and the vaguely remembered images of another world.

This poster advertises the Paris-Lyon-Marseille railway line. It promises the delights of a luxurious holiday along the . The beautiful woman holds her hands in awe against a backdrop of a blue sea and mountainous coastline. Surrounded by natural beauty, she is lined with a lush pattern of curving stalks of lilac, hydrangea, dianthus and violets. In the distance we see the distinctive towers of the famous of Monte Carlo.

Portrait of the tulip “L'Agreable”, copper made by Adam Ludwig Wirsing, for Christoph Jakob Trew's "Hortus Nitidissimis Omnem per Annum Superbiens Floribus Sive Amoenissimorum Florum Imagines" [A year in a brilliant garden of exquisite flowers represented in beautiful pictures.] published between 1750-1786.

The Hortus Nitidissimis is considered to be one of the most lavishly decorated florilegia. Each plate had to picture the flower as beautiful as possible, scientific details were less important. This extensive work is a spectacular display of the most colourful and beautiful flowers that can grown in European gardens.

“Absinthe Gempp Pernod - Lunel”, advertising poster from c. 1908, designed by Leonetto Cappiello printed in colours on two mounted sheets by P. Vercasson & Cie. in Paris. Size: approx.183 x 127 cm.

Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) is seen as the father of the modern poster. He broke with the elegant style of art nouveau artists such as Alphonse Mucha and dominated Parisian poster art for 20 years. Cappiello was influenced by other poster designers such as Jules Chéret and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Characteristic for is his attention to one catchy subject, usually humorous, with exuberant colours, an image that you understand immediately and that you will never forget.

The golden age of was between 1880 and 1910. The “Green Hour” used to be from about 5pm to 7pm, when the cafes were full of people and all the chairs and tables along the main boulevards were overflowing.

In its heyday, the Fils distillery in Lunel was producing as much as 30.000 litres of absinthe per day, and was exporting its product around the world. Gempp Pernod absinthe was widely known for its distinct taste.

“Panorama of Helsingfors and the Fortress of SvĂ©aborg”, lithograph made c. 1860

Wonderful rare view of from the time that the Grand Duchy of Finland was (an autonomous) part of the Russian Empire (1809-1917).

Russian Emperor Alexander I of Russia moved the Finnish capital from Turku to Helsinki in 1812 to reduce Swedish influence in Finland, and to bring the capital closer to Saint Petersburg. Following the Great Fire of Turku in 1827, the Royal Academy of Turku, which at the time was the country’s only university, was also relocated to Helsinki and eventually became the modern University of Helsinki. The move consolidated the city’s new role and helped set it on a path of continuous growth. The neoclassical architecture of the time (still visible in today’s downtown area), mostly planned by the German-born architect Carl Ludvig Engel, was to resemble Saint Petersburg.

ALLEGORICAL DEPICTIONS OF THE FOUR SEASONS

Set of four etchings with engraving made by Sébastien Leclerc in 1679, after tapestries by Charles Le Brun.

Charles Le Brun (1619-1690), First Painter of the court of King Louis XIV, was also director of the Manufacture des Gobelins, where tapestries and furniture for the royal palaces were made.

We see the classical gods within baroque border ornaments aggrandizing the life of Louis XIV.

In the days before cinema, television or radio, the maisons des spectacles attracted attention, just like the theaters and cafĂ©s dansant. They acted as a meeting place for the wealthy and provided a stage for famous shows and notorious r***es where big stars performed and “cocottes” captured the hearts of many men.

It was in such maisons des spectacles that Cora Laparcerie (1875-1951), an internationally renowned French star, performed as an actress, comedian and poet, with Charles Baret as conductor and impressario.
