Our partner architect Pero Puljiz has left de Architekten Cie. in January after 33 years of working as principal architect, including 27 years as a partner. He has played a decisive role in the evolution of our company. Pero has designed a broad variety of award-winning projects and completed more than 30 buildings in the Netherlands and abroad.

As a founding partner of Cie. Croatia, Pero will continue to work on intensifying collaboration between the Amsterdam and Zagreb offices. His most recent project in Croatia, Šibenik Port Terminal, will be completed in 2026.

We are forever indebted to Pero’s expertise, creativity and inspiring presence, all of which have enriched our legacy and strengthened the continuity of our company. We are looking forward to the release of his graphic novel Evening Drawings later this year, and wish him all the best privately and professionally.

BUURTCENTRUM TRANSVAAL DESIGNATED AS A MUNICIPAL MONUMENT https://www.cie.nl/buurtcentrum-transvaal-monument?lang=en Exactly 50 years after its completion in December 1975, Buurtcentrum Transvaal was designated a municipal monument by the City Executive (Mayor and Aldermen) of Amsterdam on 16 December 2025.

The community centre was originally designed by Pi de Bruijn, who worked as an architect for the Municipal Housing Department from 1970-78. This early design already contains many principles that he later further developed within de Architekten Cie.: an advanced participatory design process, the integration of interior and exterior spaces, a rich mix of functions, the synergy between old and new buildings, and architecture as an expression of optimism, continuity and vitality.

ENVIRONMENTAL PERMIT GRANTED FOR THE GREEN GALLERY | DIEMEN https://www.cie.nl/Updates-the-Green-Gallery?lang=en The environmental permit for The Green Gallery in the municipality of Diemen has been granted and is now irrevocable. This marks an important step towards the start of construction.

The Green Gallery is the first sub-area of Holland Park Zuid and comprises 444 homes and approximately 160 m² of accommodation for supported living (care), a supermarket, a childcare centre, a neighbourhood room, commercial spaces, a roof garden and a jetty. The total gross floor area is approximately 54,600 m².

The master plan was designed by de Architekten Cie. in collaboration with Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners.

de Architekten Cie. was responsible for the design of 9 of the 12 residential blocks and acted as coordinating architect for the ensemble.

The remaining blocks were designed by Jan-Willem Baijense Architect and Geurst & Schulze architecten.

The Green Gallery is a development by AM Gebiedsontwikkeling.

Construction is carried out by BAM Wonen.

DE WERELDEN: A NEW CHAPTER FOR ALPHEN AAN DEN RIJN
In recent years, dedicated efforts have focused on something greater than buildings alone. As urban designer and architect, de Architekten Cie. has been closely involved in this project throughout. With the adoption of the environmental plan, Dunavast B.V. and Prinsenburg now open the gateway to De Werelden: a new sustainable urban district that transforms the Euromarkt area in the Municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn into a green and vibrant living environment.

In close collaboration with the Municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, an ambitious area development is taking shape on the former Euromarkt site, marking a new chapter for the city. The rapid progress of this development is partly the result of its selection for the Parallel Planning pilot programme of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, carried out in collaboration with Fakton. This approach enabled an accelerated and fully integrated design process.

The scale is substantial. In total, approximately 700 homes will be realised, combined with more than 5,250 m² of amenities, including a newly added full-service supermarket, a modern health centre and various community facilities. Together with the existing Aldi, this creates a complementary supermarket offering for the future residents.

De Werelden will be a district where greenery, social interaction and future resilience take centre stage. Rooftop gardens function both as water buffers and as social spaces. The public realm is designed to support biodiversity, cooling and climate comfort. The three residential environments — Park World, Courtyard World and City World — together form a coherent living environment where people can truly feel at home.

DIALOGUE | ARCHITECT AND CLIENT Laga is developing a new clubhouse in which circularity, design and use come together. The growth of the association calls for a forward-looking approach, with a focus on reuse, flexibility and a clear, logical building layout. In this interview, we speak with (from left to right) Hans Hammink (de Architekten Cie.) and Pien Zagt and Gijs Boer (on behalf of D.S.R.V. Laga). They explain the key design decisions and reflect on the collaboration and the role of circularity in both design and construction.

“We wanted a building that offers clarity — a healthy, efficient and practical building that can last another hundred years,” says Gijs Boer.
In the interview, Pien Zagt explains that ambitions for reuse only succeed when materials are sourced and stored early enough. “You have to start early if you want to apply it properly.”

Hans Hammink describes spatial logic as an essential part of the design: “You can’t just sneak inside… you pass through the social floor.” This central route ensures that members regularly encounter one another and strengthens the way Laga functions as a community.

DE ARCHITEKTEN CIE. INSPIRES ISTANBUL WITH ‘THE ARCHITECTURE OF AGEING’
On 9 December, Erik Vrieling, architect | partner at de Architekten Cie. , will speak at Salt Beyoğlu (Istanbul) in a public programme following the screening of Where We Grow Older. Together with artist and researcher Marisa Morán Jahn, he will discuss emerging approaches to housing, ageing and care in contemporary cities.

Vrieling is the initiator and principal author of The Architecture of Ageing (2024), a research volume that frames population ageing as both a spatial and societal transformation. The work demonstrates how design, regulation and interdisciplinary collaboration can support autonomy, inclusion and appropriate housing typologies. Using cases from the Netherlands, Korea and the United Kingdom, Vrieling illustrates how urban form and care infrastructures can reinforce one another.

Jahn will share insights from her long-term work with domestic workers and from Carehaus, a co-housing initiative that links care, migration and everyday living.

The conversation brings together two perspectives: Vrieling’s strategic, design-driven approach and Jahn’s practice of care-based collaboration. Together, they will explore how cities can create new possibilities for ageing with dignity and for a more equitable distribution of care.

Legends is a collaboration between de Architekten Cie. and ANA architecten. Together we designed an ensemble where residents can grow old happily in the city. With variations in height and setbacks, a green courtyard garden, and a new public square as its connecting heart, the project contributes to the rich urban fabric of Leidsche Rijn.
By bringing together two architectural practices and a landscape architect within one building block, a diversity of styles and atmospheres has emerged that together form a cohesive whole.
We designed the residential complex with the future in mind: a living environment where vitality, connection and sustainability come together. Generous galleries and access corridors act as elevated streets — places to stay active, meet others and remain connected to the city.

The symbolic starting signal has recently been given for the construction of the new clubhouse of the Delft Student Rowing Association ‘Laga’ at the Nieuwe Haven. Sustainability and circularity are the guiding principles.

The new building, designed by de Architekten Cie. and delivered by construction company J.P. van Eesteren from Gouda, is scheduled for completion in time for the start of the 2026–2027 academic year.

The association has deliberately chosen to make sustainability and circularity the leading principles for its new accommodation. In close collaboration with the construction team, we have developed a forward-looking design that reflects these ambitions.

SPEAKS AT SUSTAINABLE HOUSING CONFERENCE IN ZAGREB https://www.cie.nl/de-Architekten-Cie-Zagreb-duurzaam-wonen-conferentie?lang=en On 26 September 2025, the conference M² for the Future – Affordable and Sustainable Housing took place at the Croatian Chamber of Economy (HGK) in Zagreb, under the theme

“A New Generation of Affordable Housing – Building Smarter, Living Better”.

The event was organized by Nikolina Brnjac, Member of the European Parliament and coordinator in the HOUS Committee, in cooperation with the Croatian Chamber of Economy, the Ministry of Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets, and the Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb.

The conference brought together representatives of European institutions, national and local authorities, academic institutions, and the private sector. One of the speakers was our architect | partner Branimir Medić from de Architekten Cie. (Amsterdam), who participated in the panel on European best practices and international examples of affordable and sustainable housing.

During the opening sessions, the importance of an integrated housing policy was underlined. Keynote speakers and panelists addressed the role of EU funds, regional development, social policy, and the legislative framework. The panel discussions focused on the contribution of local authorities, inspiring examples from cities such as London, Vienna, and Amsterdam, and the application of innovative construction methods and green standards.

In addition, the Gredelj project, in which de Architekten Cie. is also involved, was presented as a model of urban regeneration. The conference concluded with the shared insight that cooperation between governments, academic institutions, businesses, and the EU is essential to achieving sustainable and affordable housing.

In their interview with Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad (AD), architects Erik Vrieling and Jaap van den Hoogen of de Architekten Cie. explain that smaller living doesn’t have to mean living with less. Instead, it requires smart design, conscious choices, and a redefinition of what ‘living comfort’ really means.

Less square footage does not automatically translate into less space. “Every centimeter is carefully considered,” says Vrieling. But how do you live comfortably in just 40 square meters?

“The younger generation is quite content with a semi-open bedroom. We often design it so that it can be closed off. During the day, it can be opened up to allow more daylight and create playful sightlines,” Van den Hoogen explains.

FIRST HANDOVER: TIMBR IN ZAANDAM https://www.cie.nl/updates-Timbr?lang=en In just ten months, passers-by on the A8 motorway near Zaandam watched this stepped, U-shaped building rise: up to 13 storeys high, with a façade made of sustainable bamboo.

At a time when affordable housing is scarce, Timbr gives young people and first-time renters the opportunity to take their first independent step in an urban living environment.

📍 Located on Slachthuisstraat in Zaandam and designed by de Architekten Cie., the project includes: 158 sustainable rental homes, a commercial unit, a community space and parking garage and a lush green courtyard.

The first key was officially handed over in the presence of tenant Giovanni Carfora, alderman Harrie van der Laan, and ZVH CEO Franck Storm.

Giovanni captured the moment perfectly:
“The world is vast, but my heart lies in ‘de Zaan’. As a geography teacher I talk about all countries, but Timbr shows me what’s possible and how beautiful my own region is.”

In the coming weeks, the remaining homes will be delivered in phases. The project was developed in collaboration with Heddes Bouw & Ontwikkeling B.V., Blauwhoed, and KOERS.
