Innovation starts long before a new variety reaches the greenhouse.

At our lettuce breeding station in ’s-Gravenzande, Netherlands, we've expanded our capabilities with a new automated greenhouse facility dedicated to high-tech teen leaf lettuce breeding.
The new system enables our breeders to evaluate more breeding material using fewer seeds, generating stronger data earlier in the breeding process. This helps us make more informed decisions, accelerate innovation, and develop improved varieties that support growers in a rapidly evolving market.
As controlled-environment agriculture continues to grow worldwide, investments like these help us stay close to growers' needs and continue delivering lettuce varieties designed for the production systems of today and tomorrow.

Meet Guy Poskitt. For more than 40 years, Guy has been growing carrots in the UK, continuing a family tradition that started with his father on the same farm.

But carrot growing today looks very different from when he first started. Consumers expect a year-round supply, weather patterns are becoming more unpredictable, and growers face increasing pressure to produce high-quality crops despite changing conditions.

What to do when one improvement creates an economical challenge?

With every variety of crop we develop, we always aim for balance between key traits. Our small-seeded watermelons illustrate this perfectly: seedless varieties have a serious disadvantage: far less yield. That’s why we developed small-seeded varieties that hold 25-40% less seed volume but still deliver 100% on the qualities and traits that both growers and consumers love. Trials have already confirmed that consumers gladly pay a 10-20% premium for these varieties.

Always strong. More efficiency and more marketing options with adaptable varieties

The day of transplant has finally arrived!

In the final episode of Follow a Grower Spain, Iván joins Ana and Mari for one of the most exciting milestones of the season: transplant day.



After months of preparation, careful variety selection, and nurturing young plants in the seedbed, the seedlings are finally ready to move into the greenhouse. Iván shares practical advice for helping them establish successfully during their first days and explains how the sisters' choice of the right varieties provides a strong foundation and peace of mind throughout the growing season.



With everything now in place, the sisters are ready to begin the next chapter of their growing journey.
