Open Park Villa. The design of this house is meticulously tailored to the diversity of the environment. The interplay of greenery, varied ground levels, and long sightlines creates a diverse living experience.
The spread-out living floorplan on the ground floor forms as one connective space in the interior, unlike the fragmented uniformity of a single compact exterior volume. This design generates a multitude of experiences within the interior. Light shifts throughout the day, illuminating different areas but occasionally returning to certain spots later in the day. The integration of a central patio enhances the cohesion of the entire ground floor layout, providing air, light, and space. This connection blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor, intensifying sightlines and elongating them. This home feels different every day.

Nestled in a green landscape stands Lounge Lodge, a compact holiday home that excels in efficiency and spatial experience. Positioned on a subtle elevation, the lodge opens itself to the surrounding park environment, creating a strong visual connection with the natural context. Despite its modest footprint—just twenty square meters—the home is fully equipped and thoughtfully organized.

Through its smart layout, Lounge Lodge accommodates four people, offering a fully equipped kitchen, an intimate lounge area, a fold-out dining table, a sleeping niche, and a bathroom. A mezzanine above the sleeping niche and bathroom adds a second sleeping area, giving the compact volume a surprising sense of layering without diminishing the spacious feel of the interior.

The architectural strength of Lounge Lodge lies in the dialogue between inside and outside. A large south-facing sliding door draws daylight deep into the interior and blurs the boundary between living space and landscape. The exterior gains character through the rhythm of façade cassettes, within which openings are carefully integrated. This façade composition lends the volume a sculptural depth that subtly shifts throughout the day with the movement of the sun. The green tone of the cladding allows the home to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings, while the defined arrangement of panels gives it a distinct identity.

In this way, Lounge Lodge balances modesty and expression: a refined, sustainable holiday home that, through its form, materiality, and proportions, presents a contemporary vision on small-scale living.

Senior Shelter
A home for a family of three generations. On the plot of an existing main residence, i29 architects designed a second, single-story home for senior residents. The 100 m² house is a carefully considered addition that respects the scale and context of the existing site. Its placement creates a natural relationship between the main and secondary dwellings, closely connected while respecting each other’s privacy. Since its completion, the grandparents have enjoyed being close to their children and grandchildren—and vice versa. Architecture and interior design are uniquely integrated into one cohesive living volume.

The new building is a single-level home beneath an exposed-rafter roof. On the north side, the bedroom and bathroom form a tranquil zone. Large sliding doors around a centrally located patio offer extended sightlines and an airy, open feel. The patio connects the kitchen, dining, and living areas to an outdoor space that naturally extends the interior. Three fully retractable sliding doors allow a seamless transition between inside and outside, while sliding panels on the west side provide privacy and shelter.

The new principle in the design of the new elements at CourtHouse Utrecht building H is balance: between old and new, stateliness and homeliness, round and square forms, soft and hard materials, transparancy and a sense of security. Balance also refers to the scales of lady Justice, symbolising the weighing of arguments, evidence and testimonies - and thus the foundation of the judicial system.

Building H was constructed in 1903 on the Catharijnesingel as a municipal secondary school, designed by architect F. J. Nieuwenhuis. It was a stately building with a symmetrical U shaped floor plan, long sightliness, and a great sense of spaciousness.

Until around 1995, the school building served as an educational building. It was then converted into office space belonging to the newly constructed Utrecht Courthouse, which gave the building its current name: Building H. Continuous corridors were enclosed to create office spaces, sightlines disappeared and suspended ceilings were added. The original entrance and staircase consequently lost much of their function.

DP6 and i29 created a design that brings the clear structure of the historic building to the forefront once again, while adding a new layer that reflects SSR’s identity: a familiar, creative and inviting learning and working environment where course participants, teachers and staff feel at home.

Walls added over the decades, fire separations in the entrance hall, suspended ceilings and other clutter have been removed. The clear symmetrical structure, lofty ceilings and stately spatiality of 1903 are once again perceptible, and the craftsmanship in the detailing has been made visible. Strategic openings have been created to add transparency and sightlines, enhancing spatial connectivity and daylight pe*******on. The green inner garden has also been made accessible from the hall—an oasis at the heart of the building where the concept of meeting and learning from one another continues outdoors.

Courthouse Building H, Utrecht by DP6 and i29

The former secondary school building on the Catharijnesingel in Utrecht has been transformed by DP6, i29 and their design team, commissioned by the Central Government Real Estate Agency. It now houses SSR, the training institute for the Judiciary and the Public Prosecution Service.

The stately building has been carefully restored and made more sustainable, allowing its original qualities to shine once again. A new time-layer has also been added, connecting with the existing architecture while aligning with the identity and ambitions of the training institute.
