Aged 40 and unemployed for two weeks, he denied the World Cup champions
15 June, Atlanta.

Spain fired off 27 shots throughout the match, enjoyed 75 per cent possession, and the combined market value of their substitutes alone was several times that of the entire Cape Verde squad. Before the match, no one thought the outcome was in any doubt.

Yet the final score remained 0–0.

Standing on Cape Verde’s goal line was a 40-year-old veteran, Vozinha, who had just been released by his club and was valued at a mere 50,000 euros.

‘Vozinha’ means ‘little grandmother’ in Creole. Raised by his grandparents as a child, he was teased by his football-playing mates with remarks like ‘off to tell Grandma again’, a nickname that stuck with him for life and was eventually emblazoned on his shirt.

His life story has never been one of prodigious talent—

At 18, whilst others were making their mark in the youth academies of top clubs, he had no idea what professional football was;

At 25, whilst others were signing big contracts and lifting trophies, he was only just signing his first professional contract;

He then drifted between Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Slovakia… all in lower-tier leagues that most people had never even heard of.

Before the World Cup began, he briefly considered withdrawing from the national team, as a younger goalkeeper had been promoted to the starting line-up.

But he stayed on.

And then, he stood face to face with the Spanish team.

With seven crucial saves and six blocks of shots inside the penalty area, he kept a clean sheet. After the match, he was named Man of the Match and knelt on the ground, weeping uncontrollably.

He wept, not because he had become a legend in a single match.

It was because his grandparents, who had raised him, had already passed away and were unable to witness this day.

It was because his mother had bought her flight ticket and packed her bags, but was unable to attend the match in person as Cape Verdean citizens are required to pay a $15,000 visa deposit to travel to the US, and his family could not afford it.

“I’ve fought for this my whole life – for this moment, for this dream. Past generations had dreamt of this day, but it never came to pass. Now, the dream has come true.”

Within hours of the match, his Instagram following surged from 50,000 to one million, and subsequently surpassed ten million. His name was trending worldwide.

And the rest of the story is even more touching—a Chinese businessman who had been running a business in Cape Verde for over 20 years saw the reports and took the initiative to contact Wozinia’s family. He helped his mother with the visa procedures, covered the costs, and accompanied her all the way to the United States. On 22 June, in the stands during the match against Uruguay, his mother finally witnessed her son’s performance with her own eyes. The image of mother and son embracing after the match became one of the most heart-wrenching moments of this World Cup.

Wozinia said: “If I could meet my 18-year-old self, I’d tell him, ‘You should be proud of yourself.’”

The world is accustomed to celebrating 18-year-old prodigies, but for some, their brilliance only comes to light at the age of 40.

That’s all right; as long as it is seen, it is never too late.
