A lovely day at the beach

by Jan Zoetelief Tromp (1872 – 1947)

Lovely Day at the Beach is a bright and charming painting by the Dutch artist Jan Zoetelief Tromp. It depicts a peaceful summer day at the seaside, where families are enjoying their time on the beach. In the foreground, two girls sit in the sand reading together under an umbrella, while a dog rests peacefully in front of them.

D I D Y O U K N O W…. That Zoetelief Tromp’s beloved dog Billy often take centre stage in his paintings? And guess what? Billy is also featured in Lovely Day at the Beach, relaxing in the sand in the foreground!

New in the Collection - Marius Bauer at work in the studio of Isaac Israëls

With this painting the famous Dutch artist Isaac Israëls offers an intimate glimpse into the world of the artist Marius Bauer (1867 – 1932) at work. As Isaac Israëls is best known for capturing the vibrant energy of fashion houses, bustling streets, and crowded cafés, this rare and intimate glimpse into his own studio feels all the more compelling. What makes this portrait particularly captivating is that Bauer is depicted doing what he loved most: making art. At the same time, he becomes a work of art himself, caught in the very practice that first connected the two artists.

This stunning painting by the famous Eugène Boudin shows us the lively departure of fishing boats along the shore of Trouville, a beloved subject for Boudin. The composition captures several sailboats, each with tall, billowing sails, gliding across the sea under a sky filled with dramatic clouds and bright sunlight. The water shows hints of movement, reflecting both the wind in the sails and the changing weather.

Eugène Boudin (1824–1898) was a French painter celebrated for his pioneering plein air technique and his evocative marine landscapes. Today, Boudin is remembered as a master observer of light and atmosphere, whose beach scenes and coastal vistas played a critical role in shaping the evolution of modern art. Camille Corot called him the “King of the skies”. Boudin’s encouragement and mentorship were pivotal in Claude Monet’s development, helping to instill in him a love of bright hues and the play of light on water later evident in Monet’s Impressionist paintings.

D I D Y O U K N O W…. There is a Musée Eugène Boudin in Honfleur, his birthplace. The museum is dedicated to his oeuvre, housing an extensive collection of his coastal scenes and studies of Normandy skies.

“Having elder beauty take its place, enchanting modern space”

This elegant Louis XVI cabinet, to be dated around 1790, is a fine example of late eighteenth-century Dutch furniture. Constructed in solid oak and veneered with richly figured mahogany, the cabinet reflects the restrained sophistication and symmetry that characterize the Louis XVI period.

Large cabinets such as this example were among the most prestigious pieces of furniture in affluent households. They served not only as storage furniture but also as symbols of wealth, cultural refinement, and social standing. Mahogany-veneered cabinets were particularly sought after due to the rarity and expense of the timber.
