kar.ma LIVING Nepal

The latest initiative of kar.ma COFFEE together with it's NGO partner for Life (RfL) has started training women in carpentry, taking a bold step into unchartered territories in Nepal. This is aimed to kickstart a vocational training center, which will eventually be the CREATIVE side of the social business - working with new product design and keeping the kar.ma line fre

sh and dynamic. All costs of the initial phase of the establishment of the training center are covered by Roots for Life and managed by kar.ma COFFEE. Gosch's and LIenhart's vision is to empower women to generate their own income either at kar.ma LIVING or outside, while upgrading traditional knowledge with a modern twist. Follow the stories of the four bold women from Khokana who have taken this bold step, and of a journey how to start a business with a cause from scratch. We will document it every step of the way - give it some love, a pat in the back, some constructive criticism, and an occasional hug. The STORY

The principles behind Karma Coffee mandate working with producers all through the coffee chain, getting more and more small producers benefiting from the social business. Its worked pretty well so far, and apart from stakeholders directly involved in the coffee process, we engage with a host of other producers. Recently, we realized that it is really difficult to get workers who are passionate about trying new designs away from the traditional style and workers who have the knowledge of modern techniques and equipment. Many designs stayed in the ‘ideas folder’ and got dusty. Carpentry is a very male dominated, dirty field of work – most think. BUT, why not training women working with wood and changing that image? With help of SABAH Nepal and Roots for Life, kar.ma coffee selected four young amazing women from Kokhana for a training period of 5 months. They will later be absorbed into the initiative, earning full time as prototype developers / trainers / producers. kar.ma coffee is proud to be working with these amazing young women. Bold, strong, with character.

Cleaning dishes, while creating impact 🌱

Our eco-friendly dishwashing soap is made in Chitwan by marginalised women through a partnership with 6 Degrees Network for Women. Designed for everyday use in homes, cafés, and kitchens, this soap is gentle on hands, effective on grease, and made with care for both people and the planet.

The women behind this product are trained across the full journey — from soap making to packaging and distribution — building real business skills, confidence, and financial independence. With guidance from United Arocos Enterprises (UAE), this initiative goes beyond employment to long-term empowerment.

While natural hand soaps are also part of this collaboration, the dishwashing soap represents a practical step toward low-waste, responsible daily habits — proving that small choices in the kitchen can support bigger social change.

Proud to introduce this purpose-driven product through kar.maHANDMADE.
More stories and impact coming soon.

Our new Karma Soaps are made with coffee + honey sourced directly from our coffee farmer community, crafted in collaboration with .6degrees — supporting women-led production and local skills in Chitwan.

We’ve also introduced dishwashing soap, now being used inside our café.
No more market liquid soaps.
One small change toward a zero-waste café.

From farmers → makers → daily use.
This is how we close the loop. ♻️

In 2023, 6 Degrees Network for Women ( .6degrees ) established an eco-friendly soap studio in Chitwan, Nepal to create meaningful opportunities for marginalised women.

Through this initiative, women are producing natural hand soaps for hotels, businesses, NGOs, schools, and export — not only creating jobs, but building strong business acumen along the way. With guidance from United Arocos Enterprises (UAE), they receive hands-on support across every stage of the process, from soap making to packaging and distribution.

Targeted training programmes focus on the full end-to-end journey of making and selling soap, alongside personal development — enabling these women to become financially independent, self-confident, and truly empowered.

Our soaps are made using coffee honey sourced from farmers in Ilam, adding another layer of traceability and community connection.

We’re proud to introduce this partnership and these products through kar.maHANDMADE 🌱
Stay tuned as we share more about the soaps and the impact being created together.

In a quiet workshop in Kathmandu, an artisan presses their palms against a piece of raw material — feeling its weight, its roughness, its potential.
With every gentle strike and careful movement, the surface begins to change.

Each groove holds a moment:
a breath of patience,
a heartbeat of craftsmanship.

At the center of it all rests kar.ma — not just as a name, but as a reminder:
What we create, how we create it, and who we create it with…
all of it matters.

This isn’t just handmade.
It’s hand-lived.
