The Gurkhas
“Bravest of the brave, most generous of the generous, never had a country more faithful friends than you.”

Often forgotten in the discourse of the Gurkhas is the “Dukha” the suffering that has been endured. Overshadowed by military historians and regimental bravery the suffering, sadness and issues developed over +200 years of service. A biography over one’s life can not include just the highlights but also the falls.

With over 35 sites of commemoration in 4 continents it creates issues of its own. We served the British Empire but never part of it.

The Gurkhas -
Valour in the presence of the enemy.

“If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or he is a Gurkha."

- Indian Army Chief of Staff Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw (1914-2008)

Nr 18. stamped “K.B. Thakuri & Sons, Ghoom Darjeeling”
The most known maker in the Darjeeling area around WW2. Produced a large number of quality Kukri knives for private purchase and with the influx of Military staff over WW2 on “rest” leave it was not uncommon many of these ended later up in the UK, Commonwealth and the US.

Steel and metalcraft,
The «Nepalese» incl. Gurkhas and other socio-ethnic groups along the Himalayas has for centuries been involved in the craft. From Arniko and his artisans from the Kathmandu Valley, in the 13th century, who served the court of Kublai Khan to more modern days artisans working for various monasteries and various handicraft companies the craft is under constant development and change. Influences from the neighbouring areas of various dynasties and empires in greater China and Indian sub continent has always played a role. In image four artifacts over a period less than 100 years apart show a high degree of differences and influences, yet all found on Kukri/Khukuri hills snd scabbards.
Art and in this case Himalayan art has a deep and wide spectrum that I love studying.

Details,
small things that make a difference,
it is the details which make excellence 😀,
a sign of perfection
which may create a state of bliss 🙏

From an agricultural tool to high end art,
the journey is a long process of «menat»
(Nepali/dedication, commitment & discipline).
