Kia Ora tātou, this is a commissioned Tāonga I’ve recently completed, the idea of using paua shell for the tongue came from the commissioner, and my creativeness told me to the do the corner teeth aswell 😄

I took inspiration from east coast of the north island style as the client has whakapapa to that area, I hope that I’ve managed to do it justice e aku 35ers 🙌🏼

Mā te huruhuru, ka rere te manu.

Kia Ora tātou, titiro ki tēnei hei tiki Pounamu no te tai tokerau kua tāwharautia.
-
he pounamu no te wai pounamu, he paua mō Ngā karu, he iwituna te whiri.
-
This is an interpretation of a northern tribal style hei tiki, the incorporation of pounamu, Paua and waxed polyester brings this Taonga together. The patterns used here are unaunahi, a common design used in the north to symbolise a variety of things deriving from nature.

Stoked to adorn my whānau with special Taonga like this. Love you all.

Kia Ora tātou, this Taonga here is a Ngapuhi styled whēku, made from Onewa from te tauihu, Paua shell inlays and a brown waxed cord.

The surface design features kiri-kiore and unaunahi tying this whēku back to its whenua.

Carved from Uriuri Pakohe (black argilite) gifted to me by my dad
Paua shell inlayed eyes, and a 20strand four plait whiri tamaka for the plait.

Time flown carving limestone in my zone.

Mauri Ora e te iwi, here’s a hei tiki carved from Pākeho, a lovely limestone from Kaikoura, we’ve got some unaunahi detail there to add a bit of flare with a bit of a surprise on the back.

Paua shell (abalone) inlays for the eyes and a coconut husk coloured 4 plait for the braid.
