A fresh start, still connected to home.

This Stanmore Bay kitchen renovation was all about creating a space that feels lighter, softer and more connected to the rest of the home — while keeping the things that already worked.

We removed the return opening between the kitchen, dining and living areas, kept the sink and cooking zone looking out to the garden, and brought in a soft neutral palette with a stainless-steel benchtop.

We also found new ways to reuse the original solid timber benchtops, giving them a second life throughout the kitchen. 🤍

From Stark to Serene: A Warm, Considered Kitchen Transformation

When a returning client purchased this beachside Auckland apartment, the existing kitchen was one of the first spaces ready for a change. Its stark black-and-white scheme felt very different from the relaxed, warm atmosphere our client wanted for their new home.

Starting with our client’s initial design, we worked closely together throughout the process to refine the layout, materials and details, ensuring the kitchen responded to their lifestyle and the way they wanted to use the space.

Replacing the existing U-shaped layout with a freestanding island was key to opening up the kitchen and creating a more natural connection with the surrounding living area. Storage was also carefully reconsidered, including increased drawer storage and a dedicated appliance garage with bifold doors to keep benchtop appliances neatly concealed.

With the kitchen positioned at the rear of the apartment and without any natural light of its own, creating a sense of warmth and light was particularly important.

Melteca Mist Naturale and Aged Ash Organic cabinetry bring warmth and subtle texture, paired with Neolith Taj Mahal porcelain across the benchtop and splashback. Layered LED lighting adds both practical task lighting and a softer ambient glow.

The result is a kitchen that feels lighter, warmer and far more connected to its surroundings — a considered transformation shaped through collaboration and designed around the way our client lives.

Dark, Warm & Tactile

The brief for this new-build kitchen was clear: dark and moody, rich in texture, with subtle industrial, loft-inspired touches through brick and timber.

A layered palette brings the vision to life, pairing Pitch Black Laminex Acrylic cabinetry with Melteca Vintage Walnut, white Zellige tiles and warm LED lighting.

A timber benchtop was a must-have, with Walnut finished in a satin resin chosen for its rich, darker grain, beautifully tying back to the cabinetry. The homeowners had originally envisioned granite for the remaining benchtops, having used it in previous renovations. Nero Zimbabwe Riverwash porcelain was selected as an alternative, offering a similar deep colour and textured appearance, with the added practical benefits of porcelain.

At the heart of the kitchen, the custom timber island was deliberately kept free from the sink and hob, creating an uninterrupted space for gathering, entertaining and everyday life.

Function was carefully considered throughout. The pantry incorporates a dedicated hot drinks station and second fridge, while tall cabinetry at either end creates balance and generous storage.

The result is warm, moody and highly tactile — a considered balance of texture, material and function, with just the right amount of industrial edge.

The details that make a space work.

At GP+ME, our cabinetry went far beyond the reception desk.

We manufactured the softly curved water station, tiled coffee tables, lift-up bed cabinetry, doctor’s room cabinetry, kitchen areas and practical storage throughout the practice — each element carefully considered to work within the space and its purpose.

Projects like this challenge us to step outside the familiar, develop new manufacturing techniques, solve unique challenges and work with different forms and materials.

And that’s one of the things we love most about what we do. The skills and experience gained on projects like GP+ME come straight back into the kitchens and interiors we design and manufacture every day.

Award-winning GP+Me | Interior of the Year – Healthcare & Wellness

We’re incredibly proud to have manufactured the cabinetry throughout the GP+Me practice. The project, designed by the talented team at The Wonder Group, has been named Interior of the Year – Healthcare & Wellness at the 2026 NZ Design Awards — wonderful recognition of the thought, creativity and craftsmanship behind the space.

A huge congratulations to The Wonder Group on this achievement, and to Team Fitout for bringing the interior fitout together so beautifully.

We’re grateful to have played our part in bringing the vision to life and to have had the opportunity to manufacture such a considered and interesting project.
