Yesterday we were on site with Water Supply Products setting up the Hunter Wireless Valve Link (WVL) on a large commercial property.

With challenging terrain, a large site footprint and plans for future expansion, running traditional nodes to valves throughout the property wasn't the most practical long-term solution because of cost, but also the time it would take to go around to every valve on site and change run times when required.

It allows valves positioned around the site to communicate wirelessly back to a central Hunter controller giving our client one main point of control while providing the flexibility to expand the irrigation system as the site develops.

A great example of designing an irrigation system not just for what a site needs today, but for where it's going in the future.

When Seasonal Adjustments Doesn't Always Work.
Yesterday, while visiting some of our clients through and then out of Auckland, one thing really stood out...
It is DRY.
I stopped in to see one of our clients and noticed their annual plants were wilted, with the soil dry several centimeters below the surface. When I asked if their irrigation system was running, they replied:
"Yes, it's on Seasonal Adjustment."
They also mentioned that this winter has been much drier than they had expected.
That got me thinking...
So, when doesn't Seasonal Adjustment work? And more importantly, how does it actually work?
Seasonal Adjustment is a fantastic feature on your modern irrigation controllers. Rather than changing every watering schedule manually, it simply increases or decreases your programmed run times by a percentage based on the season.
An easy example being:
- Winter might run at 50–60% of your normal schedule.
- Summer may increase to 100–150%, depending on your original programming.
But here's what many people don't realise.
Seasonal Adjustment is not a drought detector.
It's simply a percentage that assumes a "normal" season.
When the seasons aren't normal like many parts of New Zealand have experienced recently it can underwater or overwater because it's still working from those original assumptions.
Unless your irrigation controller is connected to a weather station or soil moisture sensor, it has no way of knowing that rainfall has been well below average or that the soil is drying out much faster than usual.
That's why walking, feeling the soil on site and doing regular checks of your plant health is still the best way to ensure that your plants are getting just enough water (and not too much)
If the soil is dry, annuals are wilting, and the weather has been unusually dry, it's time to increase the seasonal percentage or review your watering schedule regardless of what the controller says.
A great rule of thumb is that automation is only as good as the assumptions it's based on. Technology is a fantastic tool, but nothing replaces actually looking at your garden.

One thing we get asked quite a bit is why we use certain brands over others.

The honest answer is pretty simple, we only sell and install products that we've had good experiences with ourselves. Our team touches and feels and uses every product before we decide to proceed and stock it in the shop or install it on a job.

Over the years we've tried a lot of different brands, and some have been fantastic, while others just haven't held up. When we're putting a system into someone's home or business or selling these products to our client base, we want to know it's going to last, be reliable, and if something ever does go wrong, we can easily get parts and support.

We're not interested in using something just because it's the cheapest option. We'd rather install something we know is going to do the job properly the first time.

I thought I'd share some of the brands we use every day!
