FATHER’S DAY | FOR THE DISCERNING DAD
If your idea of a great drive involves an Aston Martin, McLaren or Porsche, you probably appreciate that the difference between good and exceptional is found in the details.
The same could be said of a great lounge chair.

The best things in life are worth waiting for.
Some pieces of furniture are delivered.
Others have a journey.
Our House of Finn Juhl Japan Sofa recently arrived in New Zealand for a Design Denmark client, beginning its final journey from our warehouse to its new home.
From carefully packed in its carton, to arriving on the client's deck, to finally being unpacked and placed where it belongs.
The Japan Sofa was designed by Finn Juhl in 1957, inspired by his fascination with Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship. Its restrained form, beautiful proportions and carefully considered details are a wonderful example of Juhl's ability to bring different design traditions together.
But sometimes the story isn't just about the furniture.
It's about the anticipation of seeing it finally in place.
Worth the wait.

New Zealand is home to around a quarter of the world's seabird species, making their protection an important part of preserving our natural environment.
We recently attended the New Zealand Seabird Trust Symposium at Whangateau, where experts discussed the challenges facing many of our native seabirds. Alongside habitat loss and introduced predators, artificial light at night is increasingly recognised as a significant issue, disorientating fledglings during their first flights to sea.
Recent initiatives in Auckland, including dimming the lighting on the Sky Tower and Harbour Bridge during fledging season, demonstrate how thoughtful lighting can make a real difference.

House of Finn Juhl | Egyptian Chair
Great design often begins with inspiration.
During a visit to the Louvre Museum in Paris, Finn Juhl became captivated by the elegant form of an ancient Egyptian chair. Rather than copying its design, he reinterpreted its proportions and character through his own distinctly modern vision.
The result was the Egyptian Chair, first presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in 1949 alongside the iconic Chieftain Chair. Together, they marked a defining moment in Finn Juhl's career and helped establish him as one of the leading figures of Danish Modern.
More than 75 years later, the Egyptian Chair remains a timeless expression of craftsmanship, cultural inspiration and enduring design.

Not everyone can visualise scale and proportion from a floor plan. On a recent visit to a Fearon Hay designed home, we laid out full-size paper templates so our client could experience each piece in context before a single item was ordered.

House of Finn Juhl | Glove Cabinet
Designed by Finn Juhl for his partner, Hanne Wilhelm Hansen, the Glove Cabinet was created to house her collection of gloves. As a music publisher, she regularly attended concerts, receptions, and other cultural occasions where gloves were an essential part of formal attire.
The cabinet reflects Finn Juhl's reinterpretation of the traditional chest of drawers through its playful use of colour, refined detailing, and beautifully balanced proportions. More than six decades after its creation, it continues to demonstrate the timeless relevance of his approach to furniture design.
Today, the Glove Cabinet remains in its original setting in Hanne Wilhelm Hansen's bedroom at Finn Juhl's house in Ordrup, forming part of one of Denmark's most remarkable preserved design interiors.
