Fisher & Paykel Appliances RTA Studio. What a beautiful workspace created by RTA for Fisher & Paykel. F&P graciously allowed family and friends of their employees to visit this amazing space during an open day event.
Well done F&P for setting an example as an employer valuing their employees by providing them with a beautiful and comfortable space to look forward to spend most of their day in every day.

The PCC Vintage & Veteran Classic Yacht race (and Cake race as it was cancelled last weekend because of too strong winds). We had beautiful weather (again), and were a bit overpowered for a while, but we won our decision on S/Y Gloriana this time, finishing the day of with a rainstorm, Double Rainbows, and a cake competition. Thank you Giles for skippering us to a win 🥇 in Division C. Looking forward to to the ANZAC day race next Saturday….

The RAW house

Imagine a cosy & inviting home, nestled in a pocket of native forest, but not too far from the hustle & bustle of the city CBD and all these two world have to offer!
You won't believe that this pocket of forest is mere minutes away from the city centre and all it offers.

We mostly get our designs 'clues' from the attributes of the site on the one hand, and the occupants and their requirements, tastes and preferences on the other.

The site provided us with many challenges:

- a steep & narrow approach
- a small platform without trees
- no space to store building materials
- tall trees overshadowing the building platform

But also great attributes like:

- beautiful mature Kauri trees & lush rain forest plants
- the location close to the city CBD
- gaps in the tree canopies to optimise sunlight
- a footpath to the local beach in a secluded cove
- and existing services connections

We decided to go for black roof sheeting for the roof (the 5th elevation of this house being visible coming down the drive), and for the cladding to blend in with the dark gaps between the trees (even during daytime).

In contrast, the interior is clad in warm shades of timber to reflect the low winter sun through the expanses of glass during the cold and rainy Auckland winters.

During the hot summer months, sliding glass doors allows for the cool sea breeze to cool down the interior, rustling through the trees, while doubling as access to the large surrounding deck, perched up in the trees tops, from nearly every room.

The result speaks for itself. The owners are delighted with their home, splitting their time between the beach and the house as best they can.
