This is a very stressful time for everyone in the world. New Zealand is going into lockdown in about 24 hours for at least 4 weeks.

As a crafter, I was thinking of making something useful for people and started making washable masks. Fellow crafters, I’m sure you have some cotton cloths stuffed at the back of your crater’s cupboard. If anyone around you is waiting for the masks to be stocked at the pharmacy, you could help them by making a washable one instead of disposables that can only be used once.

If you see the second picture, I have a pattern for you. Each pattern contains 1cm of seam allowance. Dotted lines means fold outwards.
・
1. Sew the center line from nose to chin on both outer and inner layers.
・
2. Snip in 1cm apart for the center line’s seam allowance, both for outer and inner layers.
・
3. Fold the seam outwards and sew both sides of the center line so they don’t fold back. Sew both outer and inner layers.
・
4. Sew the outer and inner layers together at the top and bottom of the mask.
・
5. Turn the mask in side out so the pattern side is now facing out.
・
6. Stitch a couple mm inside of both top and bottom sewed at 5.
・
7. Fold both the ear sides twice at the dotted line of the pattern and sew over the fold leaving enough room to let through elastic.
・
If you have gauge or muslin cloth, it may be better to use it inside for extra filter.
・
Please be aware that masks do not protect you from the virus at 100% . This is at your own decision and I take no responsibility to the consequences.

Sorry it’s very difficult to explain in words, I’m happy to answer any questions so please leave in the comments below.

Stay safe everyone! @ Auckland, New Zealand
