Hellebores are not the bright, optimistic flowers that shout SPRING!

They’re moodier than that.
Dusky pinks, deep burgundies, smoky greens, creamy whites and flowers that hang their heads as though they’re keeping a secret.

They feel romantic. A little gothic. A little wild.
The sort of flower you’d expect to find growing in the forgotten corner of an old English garden, underneath trees, surrounded by ferns and moss.

Not every flower needs to be cheerful. Sometimes a garden needs a little mystery, mood and darkness!

What if more isn’t always the answer?
What if part of a good life is being able to look around and think: actually, this is pretty bloody good.

The garden. The sunshine. Good people. Small pleasures. Ordinary days.

I’m much more interested in noticing those things than endlessly chasing the next thing.

Calendulas (pot marigolds) are one of the hardest-working flowers in the spring garden.

Easy to grow, incredibly generous with their flowers, and among the first to brighten the garden after winter, they’re a favourite of both gardeners and pollinators.

Their vibrant yellow, orange and apricot blooms bring warmth to the garden just when it’s needed, providing an important early source of pollen and nectar for bees and other beneficial insects. Hate to break it to you though, they aren’t really even marigolds!

They’re wonderfully forgiving too. Sow them in the cooler months, pick the flowers regularly, and they’ll often reward you with blooms for months. Leave a few flowers to go to seed, and you’ll often find new plants popping up the following season! How good?!

Everything I’m planting now is an investment in spring!

This last month I have been sowing:

Ammi visnaga: One of my favourite fillers. Clouds of delicate white flowers on long stems that make every bouquet feel light and airy.

Sweet peas: For fragrance alone they’re worth growing.
The more you pick, the more they flower.

Campanula: Elegant bell-shaped blooms in purples, whites and pinks. Perfect for adding height and movement.

Statice: Papery flowers that last for weeks in a vase.
Just as beautiful fresh as they are dried.

Larkspur: Tall spires covered in flowers! A true cottage garden favourite and one of spring’s most rewarding cut flowers.

Strawflower: Bright, colourful blooms with incredible vase life. They also dry beautifully and keep their colour for months.

Each one has earned its place for a different reason. Some bring incredible fragrance, others add height, texture or long vase life, and together they’ll become the building blocks of countless bouquets over the coming months.

There was a time when I thought my career path had already been decided.

But flowers quietly changed everything…

I made the decision to retrain as a florist in my 40s.
It wasn’t because I knew exactly where it would lead.
It was because I couldn’t ignore how much joy I found in growing and arranging flowers.

Starting again wasn’t easy. Learning new skills rarely is. There were moments of doubt, plenty of mistakes, and no guarantees that it would become anything more than a hobby.

But slowly, one lesson became another. One bouquet became another. One season became another.

Today, I get to call this my career which still makes me smile! If there’s one thing flowers have taught me, it’s that growth doesn’t happen all at once. It happens a little every day, often long before anyone else can see it.

So if you’re thinking about making a change, learning something new, or chasing a dream you’ve quietly put aside...
