Brazilian Rusty Birdeater Tarantula
- Acanthoscurria ferina -

Native to the Amazon Basin, with confirmed record of being in Brazil, Peru, and possibly regions of western Amazonia.

These spiders spend most of their life hidden underground. Females may occupy the same burrow for years, growing and maintaining it over time.

They have terrible eyesight, so they rely on vibrations and touch. They can detect subtle movements through special sensory hairs (trichobothria)

Females can live 15-20 years whereas males only live 3-6 years!

They eat a range of different foods, crickets, cockroaches, beetles, small frogs, small lizards, centipedes and occasionally rodents. Though they have the name ‘Birdeater’ they very very rarely will consume birds. If they do, it’ll be a nestling bird or an injured bird within reach.

Most ‘birdeaters’ spend their nights waiting at the entrance of their burrow waiting for prey.

Great Mormon Swallowtail
- Papilio memnon lowi -

Male Great Mormon swallowtail butterflies are black dusted with bluish green.
These butterflies fly rapidly through tree tops while only really coming down for feeding and to look for oviposition sites (egg laying).
They largely feed on citrus plants such as limes and pomelos!

Emerald Peacock Swallowtail
-Achillides palinurus daedalus -

It is distributed in parts of Southeast Asia, particularly on islands in Indonesia. Being an island swallowtail, neighbouring island may have slightly different characteristics like wing size, width of green banding, amount of black scales and shape of the hind wings!

The wing structure of these butterflies have inspired research into advanced optical materials. This is pretty cool! aren’t green because of dye or pigment. Instead, each wing scale contains tiny microscopic ridges and air pockets arranged in a very precise pattern. These structures reflect certain wavelengths of light (green) while absorbing or scattering others.
Researches have used this as in inspiration for technology like anti-counterfeiting on bank notes and security documents as the colouring comes from microscopic structure rather than pigment!!
