I’ve been using our local West Auckland clay to make fake rocks and painted tiles. It is a weak clay so needs China clay and sand added, and I use a white slip as a painting base. Fired to 1220o with a clear glaze on top. These will go outside, the rocks full of concrete with a piece of rebar to attach it to a concrete base underground. The tiles simply cemented onto rocks. These are weatherproof. Some will be installed at Lake Panorama.

These two pieces are made from next door’s yellow West Auckland clay, dug out of their car park. I added 20% fine sea sand as the clay shrinks too much. The Minotaur’s glazes were fine but I used a commercial glaze on the satyr’s jacket and horns which is splintering off.

This is my latest, a solar fountain. Made out of wild clay 50/50 with commercial clay as our local clay is weak. Fired to 1220o with a turquoise barium glaze. The pedestal contains the water reservoir, the wee pump is in there.
