Two Chinese Wedding Baskets, Two Very Different Styles

Dating tentatively from around 1890–1930, these two vintage Chinese wooden baskets offer a glimpse into the decorative traditions surrounding weddings and gift-giving.

Traditional Chinese wedding baskets were used to carry gifts, food and other offerings between families as part of wedding celebrations. Their colourful decoration made them practical objects as well as meaningful pieces associated with good fortune, happiness and prosperity.

The first features a striking black finish with bright orange and yellow flowers, green foliage and a tall central handle. The second has a warmer brown finish, painted figures and floral details, a curved wrapped handle and metal fittings.

Despite sharing Chinese origins and a connection to wedding traditions, their contrasting colours, motifs and construction give each its own distinctive character.

Two beautiful examples of Chinese decorative craftsmanship, each with a story to tell.

Find of the Week with Michelle 📬

No pigeons, just plenty of character!

This week, Michelle is showing off these gorgeous old post office pigeon holes, and it's easy to see why she loves them. The rustic finish, beautiful patina, original stickers and even a little graffiti in the corner have all been left just as they are. These pieces have so much history, and painting over all that character would have been a crime!

They're not just stunning to look at, either. There are so many possibilities for displaying treasures, organising collections or creating a unique storage feature at home.

As for Michelle's flat cap, Helen reckons she looks like she's just been dragged up from the pit. Michelle, on the other hand, thinks it looks rather good. We'll let you be the judge!

Helen has started an antique Barbie collection! 😂 And naturally, she’s already found a rather impressive piece to add to her collection.

This gorgeous ornate cabinet has had a beautiful pink makeover, with intricate carved detailing, gold accents and plenty of old-world charm. It’s practically fit for Barbie’s dream house, if Barbie has decided to trade Malibu for something a little more antique!

We’re not sure where Helen’s new collecting hobby will lead, but knowing her, this could be the beginning of something rather interesting. Stay tuned!

New loot has arrived! 🏴‍☠️

Our pirate crew has been busy hunting for treasure, and we think we’ve come back with some pretty good loot!

This week’s haul includes a gorgeous green ceramic vase, vintage pottery, quirky lampshades, wooden clogs, some rather unusual decorative pieces and, naturally, a cow. 🐄

We’ve been searching far and wide for treasure, and there are plenty of new finds waiting to be discovered around the shop. Come and see what the crew has dragged back from their latest adventure! 🏴‍☠️⚓️

🏴‍☠️ Find of the Week: Cornish Seas 🌊

Still sailing along with our pirate school theme, this week we’ve ventured to the seaside!

Our lovely Margaret has restocked some of our favourite candles, including Walled Herb Garden, English Country Garden and Seaside. But she’s also brought us something brand new… Cornish Seas! 🌊

Made for all our wannabe pirates who want their homes smelling like the seaside, this beautiful candle is delightfully fresh and comes decorated with a little glass pebble. Cornwall’s beaches are famous for their sea-tumbled glass pebbles, so each candle gets its own little piece of Cornish seaside magic.

Imagine fish and chips, Cornish teas, seagulls squawking overhead and pirates wandering about. Now imagine all of that in candle form.

Margaret has officially bottled the seaside, and this one is our Find of the Week!🏴‍☠️🌊
